VEGAS BETTING REPORT: Why the Hype on Rookie QBs Is Overpriced

All eyes in Las Vegas are on Fernando Mendoza, where oddsmakers are adjusting expectations based on how the Raiders staff evaluates their new rookie signal-caller.

Evaluating Mendoza’s Progress

Following a 22-20 preseason win over the Houston Texans on Aug. 20, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak evaluated top pick Fernando Mendoza’s performance over the first two quarters.

“In the critical downs, I thought he played his best,” Kubiak said. “There are things that we must get corrected that we will address ASAP.”

Mendoza finished 8-of-15 for 86 yards. His night was marred by a first-half interception returned for a touchdown by Wade Woodaz, though he also delivered two precise passes that rookie receiver Malik Benson dropped. Backup Aidan O’Connell ultimately led the second-half comeback, going 15-of-24 for 166 yards to seal the win.

Asked what he needs to build consistency, Mendoza was direct: “Reps. I’m not trying to be a smart aleck there. That’s just the truth.”

Raiders Weigh Quarterback Options

The Raiders signed veteran Kirk Cousins in April to mentor Mendoza, but the rookie has displayed the arm strength, raw talent, and poise expected of a No. 1 pick.

While Mendoza remains one of the few rookies positioned to earn a Week 1 starting nod—or take over shortly after—Kubiak has yet to name a starter among Cousins, Mendoza, or O’Connell. Cousins has played just one series this preseason.

Other Rookies Making Noise

Mendoza isn’t the only rookie signal-caller turning heads across the league. In Arizona, Carson Beck has impressed in training camp behind presumed starter Jacoby Brissett and veteran Gardner Minshew.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Rams’ No. 13 overall pick Ty Simpson turned in a stellar debut against Kansas City—going 21-for-25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns—before following up with an efficient 8-for-12 effort in a 34-0 shutout of New Orleans.

While Matthew Stafford remains the unquestioned starter in Los Angeles, oddsmakers are keeping close tabs on Simpson as high-value insurance in the event of an injury.

The Maye Blueprint

This influx of young talent mirrors 2024, when New England Patriots rookie Drake Maye pushed Jacoby Brissett in camp. By Week 6, Maye took the starting mantle, initiating a breakout run that culminated in a Super Bowl appearance the following season.

For sportsbooks, the question becomes: How much does rookie hype distort point spreads, futures, and props, and are bettors routinely overvaluing these raw prospects?

Quarterback Hype Moves Markets

“Quarterback hype can influence multiple betting markets throughout the preseason,” said Joey Feazel, head of football at Caesars Sportsbook in Las Vegas.

“We often see a surge of action when a quarterback either exceeds or falls short of expectations, impacting everything from season-long props to futures markets.”

Feazel noted that market shifts happen rapidly based on limited sample sizes. For example, after the Hall of Fame Game, unexpected success from Haynes King drove increased action on Bryce Young’s season-long unders.

How Bettors Are Treating Mendoza

A similar dynamic is unfolding with Mendoza. His electric debut sparked heavy action in Offensive Rookie of the Year markets, but his pick-six in Game 2 caused bettors to pivot toward his season-long unders.

“Ultimately, news, coaching decisions, and on-field performance have the greatest impact on preseason betting activity,” Feazel said. “As the No. 1 overall pick, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Mendoza doesn’t see the field. Even if the Raiders choose patience early, the market expects him to eventually take over.”

Feazel is keeping a similar watch on Beck in Arizona. “If the team struggles in an ultra-competitive NFC West, Brissett could find himself on a short leash, making Beck a logical candidate to gain experience later in the year.”

One Final Audition

Kubiak confirmed the coaching staff is still “talking through” how to manage a room with three NFL-caliber quarterbacks.

The Raiders close out their preseason schedule Thursday, Aug. 27, against the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium—giving Kubiak one final live-game evaluation before making his Week 1 starter official ahead of their Sept. 13 opener against Miami.
