Geolocation requests during the 2024 NFL regular season highlight the market demand for legal online sports betting in several states where such gambling remains prohibited.

GeoComply, a leading business-to-business provider of geofencing, or the process of establishing a virtual perimeter around a geographic area for online regulatory purposes, reported Wednesday that would-be sports bettors in states where internet sportsbooks cannot operate lawfully were quite active during the regular football season.
GeoComply analyzed data from seven states that remain on the mobile sports betting sidelines — Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Carolina, and Texas. While in-person sports gambling is legal in Mississippi and Nebraska, online wagering is not.
PinPoint, GeoComply’s proprietary technology that can locate a computer or mobile device down to less than four feet, allows the gaming firm to identify devices attempting to access legal online sportsbooks. GeoComply reports that there were more than 33.4 million geolocation check requests from computers and mobile devices in those seven states during the NFL regular season, which ran from Sept. 5, 2024, through Jan. 5, 2025.
Budding Opportunity
With the start of the new year comes state legislatures gathering for their 2025 sessions. Gaming is again a focus in several states, with sports betting likely to be considered in most of the aforementioned jurisdictions.
GeoComply officials say the geolocation activity in the unregulated online sports betting states proves that a legal, regulated market would generate state tax revenue and protect the many millions of consumers who are interested in betting online or are already doing so through an offshore, illegal sportsbook.
This data underscores the substantial unmet demand for legal [online] sports betting in these states,” the GeoComply release said.
“The demand seen during this past NFL season shows no signs of slowing as we head into the playoffs and the Super Bowl in February. Early trends from legal markets reveal significant increases in activity compared to last year’s playoffs,” the study added.
Minnesota is considered the favorite to join the 39 states and Washington, DC, that have legalized some form of sports betting. Legislation is also expected to expand sports betting to the internet in Mississippi.
Estimated Annual Tax Revenue
GeoComply, which, of course, has its self-interests for promoting the tax benefits states could receive by legalizing mobile sports betting, says the seven states could receive millions of dollars in yearly tax revenue.
Texas, the second most populated state with over 31 million residents, many of whom are sports-obsessed, stands to gain the most with an annual tax benefit of a projected $302.4 million. GeoComply thinks Georgia could reap $112.9 million in new tax funds and South Carolina about $60.1 million.
Minnesota stands to collect $59.6 million and Alabama $53.3 million. Should Mississippi and Nebraska expand legal sports betting to the internet, those states could collectively increase their annual tax benefit by $30.3 million and $19.9 million.
“As lawmakers prepare for the 2025 legislative sessions, the data is clear: demand for legal sports betting is undeniable, and the benefits are far-reaching. It’s time to bring the protections and opportunities of a regulated market to states still on the sidelines,” the GeoComply concluded.
