A protest which turned violent was broken up by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers on Monday night in an East Las Vegas neighborhood.

What started as a peaceful protest at about 3 p.m., escalated into attacks on officers. Rocks and bottles were thrown at cops. One person even aimed a gun at officers, according to Las Vegas TV station KSNV.

Several of the protestors got into struggles with officers and were arrested.

No immediate word if any people were injured during the melee.

Video showing the violence was posted on social media and Las Vegas Locally.

In total, several hundred protestors had assembled near Charleston and Lamb boulevards. Most apparently wanted to show their anger over immigration policies enacted by President Donald Trump through executive orders.

Many of the protestors waved Mexican flags. Motorists sympathetic to the demonstration drove their cars in a nearby parking lot.

Initially, LVMPD officers encouraged the crowd to remain peaceful when officers began to arrive at about 6 p.m. But by 10:40 p.m., the LVMPD ordered protestors to leave the area after many were loud and unruly.

Became Unlawful Gathering

SWAT team members also were called to the area for what police said turned into an “unlawful gathering,” Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported.

Police also closed Charleston Boulevard between Lamb Boulevard and Arden Street. Traffic was detoured.

In nearby Los Angeles, some 200 people were arrested on Monday for a similar protest against the Trump administration. Other demonstrations took place nationwide.

Prior Vegas Protests Were Peaceful

In Las Vegas, prior protests took place recently, also opposing new immigration orders from Trump.

For instance, last Wednesday an estimated 200 protestors gathered near the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas. Protestors marched to the Trump International Hotel during their three-hour rally. There were many critical words shouted against the president, but participants remained peaceful, according to local news reports.

A few days later, on Friday, a smaller group of peaceful protesters opposing the new immigration orders rallied at Las Vegas City Hall.

Still another protest is planned from the Bellagio to the Trump International Hotel, according to KTNV.

The president’s executive orders call for immediate, tougher security on US borders and deportation of millions of migrants who are in the US illegally.

Despite his critics in Las Vegas, Trump remains popular to many people who appear to support his policies.

Last month, Trump visited Las Vegas and stayed at his Trump International Hotel. He appeared at the Circa where he spoke to more than 1,000 enthusiastic supporters about his pledge to eliminate taxes on tips. He also thanked Nevada residents for their votes in the recent election.
