WEEKND OFF: R&B Star Cancels July 4th Las Vegas Stadium Gig

The Weeknd has canceled his highly anticipated July 4th concert at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, blaming unspecified production problems.

“Event Canceled,” visitors to Ticketmaster’s page for the concert were shocked and angered to read on Monday, less than two weeks out.

An email sent out to the concert’s approximately 60,000 ticket-buyers — posted to Reddit by one of its recipients — blamed “production load-in issues.”

“The artist team is actively looking for potential dates to possibly reschedule this show,” it read. “Should a new date be confirmed, you will be the first to know.”

According to the email, the R&B superstar’s July 5 performance at the Raiders’ home football stadium will go on as scheduled, however. This suggests a previously unforeseeen obstacle preventing construction of the Weeknd’s “After Hours Til Dawn” tour stage following its use on June 29 at LA’s SoFi Stadium.

Cancel Culture

Ticketmaster’s website says that Weeknd fans will be refunded within 14-21 days. However, refunds are rarely fair or adequate compensation for Las Vegas event cancelations.

“I specifically scheduled my trip to LV for next week and was planning on going to this show and come back on Saturday,” wrote Reddit user Substantial Raise6479.

“OH MY GOD!!! WHAT! Come again!!” added @HollywoodXO_10184.

Artists have a unique obligation to honor bookings in Las Vegas since the majority of those audiences are fans planning vacations around them. Flights and hotel accommodations are often nonrefundable, and rescheduled dates aren’t ever as doable as they are in the fans’ hometowns.

While cancelations for health reasons are forgivable — such as Rod Stewart’s scotching of five dates from his Caesars Palace residency earlier this month — there really is no excuse for unforeseen production issues.

Fans of the Weeknd, who goes by Abel Makkonen Tesfaye at the DMV, are no strangers to inadequately explained concert cancellations. In 2023, the singer canceled 11 engagements in Australia and New Zealand, citing only “unforeseen circumstances.”

As of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, The Weeknd has yet to apologize or address the cause of the cancelation on his social media accounts.
