Portland Woman Accused of Killing Boyfriend Over $3,200 Lottery Win

A Portland woman is accused of running over and killing her boyfriend after a dispute over his $3,200 lottery win escalated in an apartment parking lot.

Mary Ann McKinzy, 55, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Bakersfield, Calif., last month in connection with the November 2025 death of James S. Miller, 75, according to the Portland Police Bureau. She was extradited to Oregon September 18 and now faces charges including second-degree murder.

Newly filed court documents allege the dispute began after Miller won $3,200 on the lottery.

Miller gave McKinzy $1,700 of his winnings, but later accused her of taking another $800 without his permission, according to a probable cause affidavit reported by The Oregonian.

Dispute Turns Violent

On November 28, Miller enlisted a friend to drive him to McKinzy’s apartment complex in Portland’s Centennial neighborhood to confront her and recover the money, prosecutors allege.

The friend told investigators they found McKinzy sitting inside her vehicle in the parking lot. Miller allegedly demanded that she open the door, threatening to break a window if she refused.

Miller then instructed his friend to use his vehicle to block McKinzy’s car from leaving, according to court documents. McKinzy allegedly backed into the friend’s vehicle as she attempted to get away.

The confrontation continued outside the vehicles, with surveillance footage allegedly showing Miller using a knife to stab McKinzy’s tires. His friend also told police he saw Miller throw a knife at her vehicle.

Prosecutors allege McKinzy then reversed her car over Miller.

When Miller’s friend told her to move the vehicle off him, McKinzy allegedly said Miller was “trying to kill” her before driving away.

Found Dead in Parking Lot

Police responded to the 900 block of Southeast 162nd Avenue at around 3:43 a.m., initially following a report that someone had been stabbed.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner subsequently determined he died from blunt-force trauma and ruled his death a homicide.

Investigators later located McKinzy’s vehicle at a tire shop. Court documents reportedly state that hubcaps found inside matched one recovered at the scene, while McKinzy appeared to have abandoned personal belongings in the vehicle.

By the time police obtained an arrest warrant, McKinzy had left Oregon, prosecutors allege.

U.S. Marshals located her in Bakersfield August 5. She remained in Kern County Jail until her extradition to Portland last week.

McKinzy has been booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and negligent homicide. She is scheduled to return to court September 29.
