Two employees at Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland in Hanover near the Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) have been named in a lawsuit on allegations of felony and misdemeanor theft and identity fraud.

The criminal complaint, filed in Anne Arundel County District Court, alleges that Sonejah Richards, 27, of Forestville, and Allen Hill, 26, of Washington, DC, conspired to steal tens of thousands of dollars from their employer.

The legal filing alleges that Richards and Hill worked as VIP hosts. In those roles, they had access to discretionary comps, including free slot play, that they could issue to patrons. The complaint contends that the duo printed over two dozen reward cards for fictional people and instead provided the cards loaded with free slot play to the same two individuals who prosecutors in Anne Arundel County believe were in on the criminal scheme.

The complaint, filed May 15 in Anne Arundel District Court, alleges that the 30 fraudulent reward cards Richards and Hill gave to the two unnamed individuals resulted in the casino losing more than $27K. Prosecutors didn’t charge the two people who received the cards, gambled, and won the free money.

Casino Quiet on Lawsuit

Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland features more than 4,000 slot machines, 200 live-dealer table games, and a FanDuel Sportsbook.

Opened in June 2012, the property is managed by Baltimore-based The Cordish Companies. In December 2021, Cordish sold the physical property to Gaming and Leisure Properties, a real estate investment trust, through a sale-leaseback transaction for $1.14 billion.

Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland told The Baltimore Sun that it doesn’t comment on pending litigation. Court records showed that Richardson and Hill don’t have attorneys as of Monday morning.

Live! is the second-richest casino among Maryland’s six gaming properties. In 2024, the Live! Casino won more than $523.1 million on its slot-like video lottery terminals and more than $206.1 million from its table games. Only MGM National Harbor won more money from players with VLT revenue of $510.7 million and $328 million from its felt.

In April, Cordish expanded its slot offering at Live! Maryland with 30 new Huff N’ Puff terminals. The casino celebrated the arrival of the popular titles with a free-pull slot day on April 23 where 1,000 slots players were given free slot money to gamble on the machines that come from gaming manufacturer Light & Wonder.

Maryland iGaming on Hold

In related gaming news in the Old Line State, legislation to authorize online casinos, strongly opposed by Cordish reps, has stalled in the Annapolis capital. Del. Vanessa Atterbeary (D-Howard) filed House Bill 17 in February.

HB17 seeks to allow the state’s six casinos and mobile sportsbook licenses to pursue iGaming privileges. Each online slot and table game license would cost $1 million every five years, and gross revenue from the online ops would be subjected to “an appropriate tax sufficient to provide an amount of revenue for elementary and secondary public education purposes.”

Atterbeary’s bill has stalled with the House Ways and Means Committee where it was directed on February 10.
