  • Comstock Companies says it isn’t interested in a casino in Northern Virginia anywhere other than in Tysons
  • Recent reports wrongly speculated that the company was considering Herndon or Reston

Comstock Companies is refuting reports that it’s seeking to build a casino in Northern Virginia anywhere other than in Tysons.

This week, Casino.org and other media outlets covering the Northern Virginia casino matter reported that, following its defeat to construct a casino in Tysons, Comstock, a regional real estate powerhouse in Northern Virginia, moved its focus to Herndon near Dulles International Airport. Comstock tells Casino.org that isn’t the case.

Comstock has not proposed, pursued, or supported casino development anywhere in Herndon, Virginia. The same was true when rumors were published regarding ‘our plans’ for casino approval in Reston,” a Comstock spokesperson said.

“Comstock has never pursued the approvals necessary for a casino development anywhere on the Silver Line outside of Tysons. The reason is straightforward: our concept for what this type of destination development should look like, what it should include, and how it should function is simply not compatible with a residential neighborhood. That is a matter of both principle and practicality,” the statement continued.

Tysons Casino Vetoed

Last month, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) vetoed legislation that would have allowed the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to ask county voters if they want a casino.

The legislation, Senate Bill 756, was led by Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax). The Fairfax government never asked for a casino opportunity, and the public strongly pushed back on the bill.

Comstock and its executives have contributed over $200,000 to Surovell’s 2027 reelection bid. The company remained quiet throughout SB756’s review through the Virginia General Assembly, a bill that designated only a property it controlled along Leesburg Pike at the Spring Hill Metro Station for the casino.

Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts were monitoring the Northern Virginia casino developments, both companies confirmed.

Comstock has intentionally refrained from making public statements about the possibility of a casino project being developed in Northern Virginia throughout the recent legislative process. We believe that the appropriate time to engage publicly is after legislation has passed and a formal, competitive process has commenced, as has occurred with other casino developments in Virginia. Out of respect for all stakeholders in the subject jurisdiction, we have honored that position consistently,” the company said before clarifying reports.

“We believe that Tysons would be the most appropriate location in Northern Virginia. We also believe the local economy would benefit from such a development, provided it is part of a much larger mixed-use development, not solely focused on a casino, and that the site and operator are selected after appropriate community interaction as part of a fully open, transparent, and competitive process. Northern Virginia deserves the opportunity to evaluate every available option and select the best possible development for the region,” Comstock concluded.

Casino Bill Unlikely

Spanberger said in her veto that local governments, not state lawmakers, should lead in local zoning matters, especially those involving casinos.

With Fairfax opposed to gambling, the county board has even formally adopted a position statement explaining its resistance to becoming host to a casino, the odds are long that another bill to designate the affluent area for gaming will succeed in the years ahead.

Surovell’s support for the casino could also result in a Democratic primary challenge next year.
