Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), the regulator for the province’s open igaming market, set to go live July 13, has released a summary showing 28 sportsbook and icasino operators that have registered or have commenced registration as of May 1.

Prominent Brand Names

Lynden McBeth, an AGLC spokesperson, said they anticipate updating this list weekly and that people should check back again after the weekend.

And on the AGLC’s gaming website this morning, there is this note: “We are currently experiencing a high volume of inquiries related to Alberta’s iGaming market. To ensure efficient processing, priority will be given to organizations that have initiated the registration process and paid the required fees.”

Some of the operator names released by AGLC include the biggest brand names in the industry – FanDuel, PointsBet Canada, BetRivers, theScore Bet, Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune, Bet99, Betway, Betty, BetMGM, Bally’s, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, and Caesars (Caesars Sportsbook, Horseshoe Online Casino, Caesars Palace Online).

45 Licensed Operators in Ontario

The AGLC also released an updated list of igaming systems providers that have registered (22) as well as igaming platform providers (8) and igaming goods and services suppliers (11) that are on board.

Alberta’s new, open regulated igaming will compete with the government’s Play Alberta platform, with a regulatory regime similar to the one in Ontario, that’s now four years old. As of this morning, according to iGaming Ontario, there are 45 licensed operators and 79 gaming websites that are live in Ontario.

In Alberta, AGLC is the regulator responsible for registrations and regulatory oversight. The new Alberta iGaming Corporation is responsible for the commercial agreement with operators, anti-money laundering, pubic complaints and financial and income reporting.

20% House Cut

When things get going, Alberta’s “house cut” will be 20% of net igaming revenue, with 80% going to operators. Plus 2% of total gross gaming revenue (GGR) will go to support First Nations and 1% to total GGR will be allocated to social responsibility initiatives.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta,” said Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports at DraftKings, in April.

“With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup — hosted right here in North America — it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
