  • 14% YoY increase in active player accounts during Super Bowl
  • Greater gains seen in US states cracking down on offshore books
  • Stats come from GeoComply online sportsbook customers

The on-field product for Sunday night’s Super Bowl, a dominant 40-22 blowout by the Philadelphia Eagles over the Kansas City Chiefs, left a lot to be desired from a quality standpoint, but Vancouver-based GeoComply is reporting it was a win on the sports betting sign-up front.

GeoComply, the anti-fraud and geolocation compliance technology company with sportsbook clients around the world reported on Monday a 14% increase in active player accounts across its online sportsbook customers during Super Bowl Weekend compared to last year.

How many of those were existing bettors signing on for new sportsbook apps to take advantage of bonuses and how many were new bettors is another question.

GeoComply: Converting Bettors to Regulated Platforms

GeoComply reported the creation of more than 724,400 new online wagering accounts across its customer platforms in regulated states, which is a huge number. And perhaps more telling, the company is reporting the growth rate is twice as high in states that have taken enforcement action against illegal offshore sportsbooks.

Since last year’s Super Bowl, 14 states have issued cease-and-desist orders against at least one prominent illegal sportsbook, GeoComply said in a statement.

“When states take enforcement action, we see a correlation with increased engagement on our customer’s platforms,” said GeoComply CEO and co-founder Anna Sainsbury. “More fans are choosing legal sportsbooks, driven by stronger consumer protections and enhanced user experiences. This means even greater tax revenues to support local communities and promote responsible growth while reducing reliance on illegal sportsbooks.”

533K Geolocation Transactions in New Orleans

Sports betting transactions skyrocketed in New Orleans over the weekend, GeoComply also reported. Nearly 535K geolocation transactions from over 60,400 active accounts were recorded in the city that hosted Sunday’s game. Those transaction numbers represented an increase of 150% from the previous weekend, with a 220% increase in users.

GeoComply reported a peak of 14,300 geolocation transactions per second just before halftime, right after the Eagles scored their third touchdown of the game.

GeoComply technology uses over 820 data points to track and confirm that the player is placing the bet in states where sports betting is legal before the bet is placed.
