  • OLG and Ontario government give blessing to casino move
  • Construction can’t start until zoning approval from province
  • Past news reports says Gateway plans to expand casino; no comment from Gateway itself

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the government of Ontario has approved Gateway Casinos and Entertainment to relocate its Innisfil, Ontario, casino to a new site in the town.

Zoning Approvals Still Needed

OLG said in a statement that Gateway must receive all required municipal approvals before construction can begin.

Gateway had made the announcement last year of their intention to move the casino to a spot near the Cookstown Mall site.

The town is in support of the move, but the town and Gateway are still waiting on a ministerial zoning order (MZO) from the Ontario government before they can build.

In Ontario, OLG conducts and manages gaming on behalf of the provincial government, including casinos. Gateway Casinos Innisfil and Georgian Downs racetrack is one of eight properties owned by OLG, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. and Great Canadian Entertainment.

2028 Opening?

Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. is based in Burnaby, B.C., and operates 31 gaming properties in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

The Innisfil property has more than 1,000 slot machines, 26 live table games and roulette and blackjack e-tables.

OLG makes gaming revenue installment payments to the 29 Ontario communities that host land-based gaming facilities every quarter.

The payments are based on a graduated scale of slot machine revenue, and a share of table game revenue and sportsbook revenue for those sites that offer those services.

$1.3 Million in Municipal Payments in Q4

Under the agreement, municipalities receive 5.25 per cent on the first $65 million of slot revenue, 3.0 per cent on the next $135 million of slot revenue, 2.5 per cent on the next $300 million of slot revenue, 0.5 per cent on the slot revenue above $500 million, and 4.0 per cent of table game revenue (if applicable), and 4.0 per cent of sportsbook revenue (if applicable).

The revenues help support local programs and critical infrastructure, and through that job creation.

OLG just announced Q4 FY25 payments back to municipalities in the province that host casinos – Innisfil took home $1,292,539 in Q4, and $114,268,382 since the facility first opened in November 2001.

Recent reporting has Gateway looking to begin construction on the new Reive Boulevard facility in 2025 or 2026. A spokesperson from Gateway said in recent reporting the company looked forward to expanding its dining, gaming and entertainment offerings in the new property.

Casino.org reached out to Gateway for comment but didn’t hear back.
