Ontario iGaming Hits $9.48 Billion in May Wagers as Online Casino Continues to Dominate

Ontario’s regulated igaming market generated CAD $9.478 billion in total cash wagers in May, the fourth highest since the market launched over four years ago, according to financial data released by iGaming Ontario today.

May Wagers Remain Near Record Levels
The all-time record for the Ontario market was the $9.592 billion that people wagered in March.
May’s cash wagers was a 2% increase from April. The Ontario market saw $413.1 million in total non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR), second highest of all time. December’s $425.6 million in NAGGR was the highest.
Online Casino Continues to Drive Growth
The number of licensed operators in Ontario now sits at 45, operating 79 gaming websites. Several of the larger operators, like FanDuel and DraftKings, have launched separate platforms dedicated to casino, a response to the overwhelming popularity of that product category in the province.
On the total cash wager side of the ledger, casino had an 88% market share in Ontario, at $8.371 billion, a 3% month-to-month increase. Sports betting came in at 10% market share in May ($972 million), a 7% month-over-month decrease, with peer-to-peer poker coming in at 1% ($134 million), up 5% compared to April.
Player Spending Holds Steady
On the total cash wager side, the market share for casino over the past 12 months has never dipped below 85%.
On the NAGGR side, casino generated $326.4 million for the month, for a 79% market share, and a 4% increase month-over-month. Sports betting came in at $81.3 million (20% market share), a 5% decrease compared to the previous month, with poker at $5.4 million in revenue (1% market share, 2% increase).
Active player accounts slipped a notch – 1.257 million, down 1% compared to April. Average revenue per active player account was $329, a 3% uptick compared to the previous month.
In May, a study released by iGaming Ontario and the Alcohol and Gaming Association of Ontario, the provincial regulator, revealed that 91.1% of respondents who gambled online reported doing so on regulated sites. That was a 7.4% increase compared to the previous year (83.7%).
