Allegations of Sharing Inside Information

According to reporting first by The Athletic, during a court hearing yesterday in New York, where a judge was going to hear Rozier’s motion to dismiss charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering against him, prosecutors informed Rozier’s lawyers of the superceding charges of sports bribery and honest services wire fraud.

Rozier pled not guilty in December. Yesterday’s hearing to argue for the dismissal was then overshadowed by the news of the new indictment. The judge did not rule on the motion to dismiss yesterday.

Those new charges will be filed in the coming weeks, according to the reporting.

Rozier Charged Last Fall

Rozier was one of 34 people charged by federal authorities last fall for alleged involvement in illegal gambling schemes. Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones were charged in a separate case for allegedly defrauding poker players in games linked to New York crime families.

In the original charges from last fall, Rozier was said to have allegedly pulled himself out of a 2023 NBA game when he was member of the Charlotte Hornets, playing that night against the New Orleans Pelicans. Rozier played the first nine minutes and 36 seconds before leaving, saying he had a foot injury.

In court documents federal prosecutors have stated that Rozier shared that information with gamblers, who wagered on Rozier Unders that game, with gamblers said to have placed more than $200,000 in wagers, profiting in tens of thousands of dollars.

Jones Expected to Plead Guilty

Rozier was one of six men indicated on charges related to that investigation. Prosecutors charge that Rozier’s friend Deniro Laster drove through the night to Rozier’s house and counted the profits with him.

If convicted, Rozier faces a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment on the wire fraud conspiracy count and 20 years’ imprisonment on the money laundering conspiracy count.

Jones was also charged in the Rozier case. He is expected to plead guilty today to at least one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the first person involved in the government’s gambling sweep last fall to do that.
