Steve Wynn to Make First Public Las Vegas Appearance Since 2018 Exit

Key Points

  • Steve Wynn will break an eight-year public Las Vegas hiatus on Oct. 22 at a Neon Museum fundraiser at the Golden Nugget
  • The program will trace the planning, funding, and launch of The Mirage from 1987 through 1992
  • Opened in 1989, The Mirage set the template for modern megaresorts before closing to make way for Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Steve Wynn will make his first public Las Vegas appearance since 2018 this fall, taking the stage on Oct. 22 for a Neon Museum event reflecting on the history and impact of The Mirage.

The one-night fundraiser will be held inside the Golden Nugget—the downtown property where the former gaming mogul first built his empire.

This will be Wynn’s first public Las Vegas appearance since a sexual misconduct scandal ended his casino career in 2018. Since then, Wynn, now 84, has lived primarily in Palm Beach, Florida. (This week, he sold his Beverly Hills mansion.)

Undeniable Legacy

With The Mirage, Wynn single-handedly ended the era of Las Vegas as a national punchline — a place to lose money while barely being placated by second-rate entertainment and cheap buffets.

Wynn’s vision is credited with transforming Las Vegas into what it remains 37 years later: a destination for world-class amenities, superstar residencies, and fine dining — along with prices to match.

“Las Vegas remains one of the most iconic cities in the world and Mr. Wynn’s role in that is undeniable,” said Neon Museum CEO Aaron Berger in a press release.

The Golden Nugget program will focus on the years 1987–1992, tracing the conception, financing, construction and early operations of The Mirage, which opened in November 1989.

Originally designed as a Polynesian-themed oasis in the desert, the property debuted a myriad of innovative attractions — from Siegfried & Roy’s tiger show to the debut of Cirque du Soleil’s tented Nouvelle Experience and the iconic artificial volcano that wowed millions of guests at over 400,000 shows.

The program will also explore “the unprecedented risks” associated with the project — including its then‑record $630 million financing package.

The Mirage closed its doors in 2024 and will be the site of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Golden Choice

Wynn owned a controlling interest in the Golden Nugget from 1973 through 2000. In fact, it was his sale of the Atlantic City outpost of this casino brand, for $440 million to Bally’s in 1987, that helped will his vision for The Mirage into reality.

The Neon Museum has recently expanded its Mirage collection, adding items donated this year including a ceramic sculpture from the Secret Garden, the Lagoon sign, and an original Volcano FireShooter — all now displayed in the Neon Boneyard.

Tickets for “Reflections of The Mirage” are available through the Neon Museum’s website.

It's no longer a fun place for all but a pig sty for the wealthy. Even when it was run by the Mafia it was better than now. I can't wait to see it when the water runs out and a the glitz goes dark..
