- Betting set to heat up ahead of UFC Freedom 250 event on White House lawn this Sunday
- Ilia Topuria big betting favourite against Justin Gaethje in lightweight belt unification bout
- Alex Pereira takes on Ciryl Gane in interim heavyweight title bout
The big unknown keeping Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President and CEO Dana White up at night just days before UFC Freedom 250 at the White House doesn’t have anything to do with the fighters or security. It’s lightning.

Topuria’s Comeback
The event on the lawn of the White House Sunday night (8 p.m. EST) will feature seven fights, including two title fights.
“We’re going to be good on Sunday,” White said to Associated Press. “I don’t care if it snows, rains, we’re going. Even lightning. You guys all played sports when you were growing up. Whenever there was lightning, you’d sit the lightning out. When it was over, you played. That’s what we’ll do.”
According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert, Sunday will be a hot and humid day, as at least the morning looks dry.
“As we get later in the afternoon and into the evening, a thunderstorm will be possible,” he told Casino.org. “The best chance for any storms looks to be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., and any of the storms can bring heavy downpours, gusty winds and lightning delays. We are looking at a high in the afternoon of 94 degrees, but as storms move through, temperatures will drop and close to the start around 8 p.m. We are looking at temperatures to be in the lower to mid 80s with humid weather remaining. The threat for lightning looks to be out of the DC area by midnight as some drier air works in.”
Seven Fights, Including Two Title Bouts
UFC Freedom 250 is the first professional sporting event ever to be held on Presidential grounds, and came out of a comment President Donald Trump, a big UFC fan who regularly attends fights live, made during a speech last July.
Trump then suggested the idea to White, to make a live outdoor UFC fight next to the White House a key part of commemorations for the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.
White never has been a fan of outdoor events but made an exception in this case.
Pereira Versus Gane for the Heavyweight Title
The headliner features the return of lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, who stepped away from UFC last year to tend to a personal matter, going up against interim UFC lightweight title holder Justin Gaethje. Gaethje won the interim belt in impressive fashion last January in Las Vegas, beating Paddy Pimblett in an unanimous, five-round decision.
The other title fight is a heavyweight interim title bout between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane. The other fights are Sean O’Malley versus Aiemann Zahabi in a bantamweight bout, Josh Hokit versus Derrick Lewis in a heavyweight bout, Mauricio Ruffy versus Michael Chandler in the lightweight division, Bo Nickal versus Kyle Daukaus in a middleweight division fight, and Diego Lopes versus Steve Garcia in a featherweight bout.
Up-To-Date Odds
“I have pretty high expectations for this fight card,” said Brandon Yaeger, Lead Combat Sports Trader at Caesars Sportsbook. “There are some obvious unknowns with the event taking place on a Sunday, but that means they’re not competing with the NBA Finals for attention. I think the names on the card are very quality and fan favorites, but the odds on some of the fights make it hard to really get a ton of betting action early outside of parlay action.
“So, I expect a lot of the action to pick up Saturday and Sunday when the hype and attention for the fights ramp up. So far, the action has been pretty tame. There’s been lots of parlay action early; the two title fights are getting a ton of love there.”
Topuria a Big Betting Favorite
Topuria is a big betting favourite at Caesars this afternoon, sitting at -600, Gaethje at +430. The other title fight between Pereira and Gane is a pick ’em at -110. Lopes is -160, Garcia +135, with Nickal -360, Daukaus +280. Ruffy is -700 against Chandler, who’s at +500. Hokit is -400 against Lewis (+310). O’Malley is -450, Zahabi +350.
“I’d imagine this card will outperform almost every numbered card this year by a considerable amount, outside of the McGregor International Fight Week card,” said Yaeger. “The big names on this card, even with some heavy favorite prices, should still draw significant interest.
“Of course, an Alex Pereira title fight with a chance to make history at a pick’em price tag should get a ton of handle by itself. The only question is how much a seven-fight card compared to the typical 11-13 fight card will change the betting action.”
Popular Props
At BetMGM, most bet fights (tickets) are Topuria-Gaethje, Pereira-Gane, and Hokit-Lewis, with Gaethje (+425), Chandler (+500), and Lewis (+310) most bet fighters (tickets). Most bet props are Topuria in Round 1 +150, Topuria in Round 2 +325, Garcia by Decision/Technical Decision +550, Gaethje by KO/TKO or DQ +600, and Topuria to win in 60 seconds or less +950.
“UFC Freedom 250 has some massive favorites on paper, so the book is going to need at least one large upset to avoid the chalky parlays streaming in,” said Alex Rella, Trading Manager, BetMGM. “With only one fight favored to go the distance on the night, the fans are betting on these fights not to reach the judges.
“Looking at the main event, unsurprisingly, Justin Gaethje is the most popular underdog of the night, but Topuria is looking to KO a fourth legend in a row. The co-main event is currently a pick ’em, but the public is firmly behind Alex Pereira and I expect that gap to widen even more during the week.”
