The Luck of the Irish rang true on St. Patrick’s Day this year, as a single ticket sold for the Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday, March 17, hit the jackpot.

The winning numbers were 4, 11, 18, 38, and 50. The gold Mega Ball was 24.

The lottery game’s top prize was just $60 million because the Mega Millions jackpot had been hit only a week earlier on March 10. This week, the Ohio Lottery said the winner came forward.

Lottery officials revealed that the winner opted for the one-time cash option of $30 million. After state and federal taxes, the winner received approximately $21,975,000.

The life-changing play was sold in Van Wert at Tyler’s Short Stop, a Sunoco gas station and convenience store. The retailer received a $60,000 commission bonus for selling the St. Patrick’s Day Mega Millions winning ticket.

Winner’s Secret Identity

In Ohio, lottery winners are permitted to remain anonymous, so long as they establish a trust or similar entity and publicly designate an attorney, financial advisor, or other administrator.

The Mega Millions winner opted for such anonymity by forming the Happy Trails Trust. The financial holding account is being represented by Shaun A. Putnam, Esq., a native of Van Wert whose Putnam Law Offices specializes in estate planning.

Mega Millions Jackpot Reset

Since April 2025, Mega Millions resets to $50 million after the jackpot hits. The jackpot was previously reset to $40 million.

The baseline for the top prize was amended, along with the minimum price for a ticket, more than doubling from $2 to $5. However, the new entry cost did away with the $1 add-on Megaplier in favor of every ticket automatically including a so-called “multiplier.”

The multiplier gives every play more ways to multiply wins.

Each ticket is assigned a random multiplier result, including 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, and 10X. The odds of a ticket being assigned 2X are about one in two, while the 10X outcome occurs with one in every 32 tickets.

Mega Millions officials say the gameplay change, which eliminated break-even outcomes, has resulted in more winners and larger non-jackpot wins. The odds of hitting the jackpot did improve ever so slightly, from one in 302.5 million to one in 290.4 million.

Weekend Lottery Jackpots

The next Mega Millions drawing is tonight, Friday, April 24.

The game comes with an advertised annuitized jackpot of $150 million, with the cash option at $67.3 million. Mega Millions has rolled over 10 times since the St. Patrick’s Day win.

On Saturday, Powerball will offer a jackpot at an estimated $118 million, with the cash at $53.9 million. Powerball was last hit on April 6, when a single ticket sold in Delaware won a $230.8 million jackpot.
