The West Virginia Lottery held an emergency meeting conference call this afternoon to discuss the review of The Greenbrier’s gaming license.

This review is necessary to ensure the uninterrupted operation of Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, dba as The Greenbrier, to prevent any disruption in services or revenue that could adversely affect the financial stability of the State of West Virginia,” a notice from the West Virginia Lottery Commission read.

During the call, the commission voted in favor or renewing The Greenbrier’s gaming license.

Hotel Turnover Blamed for Delayed Disclosure

West Virginia’s casino regulations require that “historic resort hotels,” aka The Greenbrier, supply the Lottery Commission with audited financial statements ahead of renewal. The Greenbrier’s gaming concession is reviewed and renewed every five years.

Upon renewal, the West Virginia Lottery Racetrack Act requires The Greenbrier to pay $25,000 to the Lottery Commission to cover its regulatory costs.

WV Metro News reported that Steve Ruby, an attorney representing The Greenbrier, told the Lottery Commission last week that the resort had encountered significant staff turnover in its finance department. Ruby said the casino’s accountants were working diligently to ready the financial statement before the gaming license was to expire on Wednesday, July 1.

The report was delivered to the Lottery Commission this week, giving the board ample time to quickly review The Casino Club’s financial situation and approve its gaming license for another year.

Casino Saved Historic Resort

The Casino Club at The Greenbrier is credited with helping save the historic property where more than two-dozen US presidents have stayed. When coal tycoon Jim Justice agreed to purchase The Greenbrier out of bankruptcy in 2009, he championed a local referendum to allow casino gaming at the resort. The Casino Club opened in July 2010.

The Greenbrier casino is reserved for overnight guests, event attendees, Greenbrier members, and residents in the Legacy Club or Sporting Club. The Casino Club offers 160 slot machines, 30 live dealer table games, and a FanDuel Sportsbook.

The smoke-free casino has a strict dress code, with resort attire only allowed before 7 pm. After 7 pm, denim is not allowed, and jackets are required for gentlemen.

On the grounds of The Greenbrier is a decommissioned underground bunker that was to serve as an emergency shelter for the US Congress during the Cold War. Once veiled in secrecy, visitors can now take 90-minute tours of the underground bunker. They can also continue to spin the reels and play table games.
