  • Bet365 has been added to the list of approved operators preparing for the upcoming Alberta regulated marketplace
  • The pool is growing fast, with more than 55 operator sites expressing formal interest or entering the AGLC registration process ahead of the official July 13 launch date
  • As a proven global heavyweight, bet365 brings a massive portfolio, already operating across dozens of highly regulated iGaming markets around the world

Global sports betting and iGaming giant bet365 is the latest operator to register with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) ahead of the province’s regulated market launch on July 13.

An Emerging Market

The addition of bet365 brings the total number of registered iGaming operators to 31, according to the AGLC registry.

To operate an igaming site under the new Alberta regulatory regime, operators must first engage with AGLC, which provides the regulatory oversight for the market.

Upon completion of registration with AGLC, operators must then enter into a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).

The AiGC functions in a conduct and management role, overseeing commercial agreements with operators, anti-money laundering, dealing with public complaints and all financial and income reporting. This role mirrors that of iGaming Ontario, which has the same role in the Ontario regulated iGaming market.

70 Operators for Alberta?

Bet365 is a global player, operating in dozens of regulated markets around the world, offering sports betting, online casino, poker, bingo and live in-play wagering.

The company is well established in Ontario, having entered that igaming market in 2022, the year that province’s regulated igaming market went live.

Last week, in opening remarks that kicked off the SBC Summit Canada in Toronto, Dale Nally, Alberta’s Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape, told the crowd there could be as many as 70 igaming operators ultimately doing business in Alberta.

Market Launch Set for July 13

At the summit, Nally said 37 operators have paid their registration fees and are ready to launch July 13.

“[The] Reality is simple: Albertans are already gambling online,” he said. “The question was never whether online gambling existed. The question was whether it would happen in a regulated environment with strong standards, clear oversight, and meaningful player projections.

“We believe Alberta has entered this market with significant advantages. We have one of the strongest economies in North America. We have a business environment that understands competition, innovation, as well as investment, and we have a government that believes clear rules and smart regulation create the conditions for growth.”

Media reports have suggested that the government-run Play Alberta platform, which will soon be competing with the private market operators entering the newly-regulated market, could be for sale.

In Ontario, Proline, run by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, competes with private igaming operators, currently at 44 licensed operators.

BetVictor was also added to the list of AGLC igaming operator registrants this week.
