The New York Knicks, looking for their first NBA championship title since 1973, are 4.5-point underdogs at many sportsbooks going into Game 1 of the NBA Final against the San Antonio Spurs tonight (June 3).

Knicks Underdogs on the Spread

Game time is 8:30 p.m. EST, at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, TX. The only notable injury to keep an eye on is centre Mitchell Robinson of the Knicks, a game-time decision, dealing with a broken finger. ESPN this afternoon reported that Robinson is expected to be available for tonight’s game, after fully participating in practice yesterday.

The Spurs are betting favorites primarily because of the dominance shown by 7-foot-4 forward Victor Wembanyama. But they are coming off an emotional seven-game series win over defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, a series that wrapped up Saturday.

The Knicks on the other hand last played May 25 after taking out the Cleveland Cavaliers in four straight and have won 11 NBA playoff games in a row.

Money Heading Knicks’ Way

At BetMGM this morning, the Spurs are betting favorites for Game 1, at -185 on the Moneyline, the Knicks +150 (generating 67% of bets, 54% of handle). At DraftKings the Spurs are -185, the Knicks +154.

The Spurs are -4.5 on the BetMGM Spread (getting 61% of bets, 67% of handle), Knicks +4.5. The Over/Under is 218.5 (the Over is seeing 63% of bets and 69% of handle). It’s the same at DraftKings – Spurs -4.5 on the Spread, at -112 (Knicks +4.5 at -108).

The Spurs have the best player and the better overall team making them clear favorites in the NBA Finals,” said Anthony Parenti, Sports Trader, BetMGM. “The sportsbook will be cheering for the Knicks as San Antonio is the biggest remaining liability on the futures book.”

Wembanyama for MVP

MVP betting at BetMGM pits the Knicks’ Jalen Brunson (+200) versus Wembanyama (-170). Brunson is seeing the most betting action there – 17.8% of bets and 24.6% of handle.

“Early action has seen this series pretty evenly bet to this point,” said David Lieberman, Caesars Sportsbook Pro Basketball Lead. “As far as tickets, there are more on the Knicks so far by about 2:1, while the Spurs have taken slightly more money.

“This was probably the best basketball matchup we could have gotten in the Finals, and it should be a highly entertaining series to watch.”

It’s a great team,” said Wembanyama, to Associated Press, talking about the Knicks. “It’s a great team of experienced guys who are not here by chance, but by relentless effort over the years. Very different career paths for all of them. They’re right where they’re supposed to be, in my opinion.”
