  • Atlantic City police will crack down on the use of cannabis along the ocean-front city’s famed boardwalk this summer
  • Violators of the city’s Boardwalk smoking ban could face fines
  • The enforcement effort follows complaints from shop owners, tourists, and local residents

The pungent smell of cannabis has become such an issue along Atlantic City’s five-mile-long boardwalk that the local police are stepping in to do something about it.

Smoking weed and cigarettes along the boardwalk is already illegal. Atlantic City has the most cannabis dispensaries in New Jersey, so the volume of weed available has led more people to disregard the law.

According to reporting by NBC 10 Philadelphia, the local police have heard complaints from residents, visitors, and local businesspeople, and they are going to deal with it.

They don’t want to see it. They don’t want to smell it. So we’re going to address it,” said Capt. Kevin Fair of the Atlantic City Police Department.

More officers are going to patrol the boardwalk, thanks to a $3 million grant from the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

No Weed Smoking on the Boardwalk

Violators can face fines if caught smoking on the Boardwalk. Adult-use cannabis was legalized in New Jersey in 2021. Atlantic City has embraced the industry with open arms, with 12 dispensaries now open and dozens more approved.

Bally’s, Caesars, Hard Rock, Ocean Casino Resort, Resorts Casino Hotel, and Tropicana are the casinos located on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
