- The mother whose kids died in a Detroit casino parking garage could face charges
- Two children, aged nine and two, died in February
- An investigation into their deaths is ongoing
Officers with the Detroit Police Department say they aren’t behind a warrant request filed with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for the mother whose two children died after spending the night in a running vehicle parked at Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

Fox 2 Detroit reported that someone with judicial power thinks Tateona Williams, 29, should face criminal charges after two of her five children died on February 10. As Casino.org previously reported, Darnell Currie, 9, and his little sister, A’millah Currie, 2, died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Williams, unemployed, homeless, and living out of her van, sought warmth in the parking garage during the early morning hours of February 10. Sometime that morning, however, she discovered that Darnell and A’millah weren’t breathing. She called a family member who arrived and took the two children to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan about a mile and a half away. Both kids were later pronounced dead.
Williams admitted to letting the vehicle run as the family slept to keep warm. It’s unknown if there was a leak in the van’s exhaust that might have pushed the toxic carbon monoxide gas into the vehicle or if it was parked in a corner where the gas could have built up around the automobile.
Request to Arrest?
Earlier this month, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the children died of carbon monoxide poisoning, not hypothermia as originally suspected. No charges have been filed, and the coroner didn’t suggest that their deaths were intentional.
Maria Miller, a spokesperson for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, confirmed that a warrant request had been received but said “no further information” would be released until the office’s full probe of the tragedy was completed.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison dismissed the media reports that suggested his department was behind the appeal.
I want to clarify recent reports regarding the tragic incident at the Greektown Casino parking structure involving Darnell Currie Jr. and A’millah Currie. The Detroit Police Department (DPD) has completed its investigation into their deaths and submitted the findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review. DPD has not requested charges to be filed against any family member of the children,” Bettison said in a statement.
“As we do with every case, we have simply turned over our investigative file to the Prosecutor’s Office for its review and determination,” Bettison continued. “Any charging decisions will be made solely by the Prosecutor’s Office.”
City officials say Williams didn’t take up repeated offers from shelter intake outreach.
