Tennis Legend Rafael Nadal Exits Retirement to Play ‘MGM Slam’ in Vegas

Key Points

  • Rafael Nadal will pause his retirement for the MGM Slam at T-Mobile Arena on Feb. 28, 2027
  • The 22-time Grand Slam winner previously played T-Mobile Arena against Carlos Alcaraz in March 2024
  • He retired due to mounting injuries in November 2024

Retired tennis star Rafael Nadal will make his first competitive appearance since ending his professional career in 2024 when he headlines the MGM Slam at T-Mobile Arena on Feb. 28, 2027. The event was announced Monday, Oct. 26, by MGM Resorts, though its other participants and its format have not yet been announced.

The appearance will mark a notable return for one of the most decorated players in tennis history. Nadal won 22 Grand Slam singles titles during his career, including a men’s-record 14 French Open championships, before retiring in November 2024 after years of battling injuries.

Nadal last played in Las Vegas at T-Mobile in March 2024, when he faced fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in a sold-out exhibition match that streamed on Netflix. At the time, Nadal was still an active player and several months away from retiring.

Nadal has largely stayed out of the spotlight since hanging up his racket, focusing on business ventures, tennis academy operations, and occasional public appearances rather than active competition.

The bigger story may be whether Nadal’s return represents a one-off exhibition or the start of a broader post-retirement schedule of paid appearances.

The MGM Slam has become an annual fixture on Las Vegas’ increasingly crowded sports calendar. The 2026 edition featured eight ATP players, including American star Taylor Fritz, with Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca winning the event.

Nadal’s payday for participating in the MGM Slam is a guarded secret. Exhibition appearances by retired sports icons can command substantial appearance fees, but MGM has not disclosed financial terms.

Tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. PT Friday, Oct. 30, via AXS.com, with presales for MGM Rewards and AXS members beginning 10 a.m. PT Oct. 27.
