- NCAA eligibility for Sorsby now uncertain
Texas Tech starting quarterback and top-tier transfer Brendan Sorsby is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the program to enter a residential treatment center for gambling addiction.

Top College Player
As ESPN reported, Sorsby represents the first prominent U.S. college athlete to admit a gambling addiction and to voluntarily check himself into a help facility.
Collegiate eligibility for Sorsby is a big underlying theme in this story, revolving around the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) rules and gambling. Betting on college and professional games violates those rules, and players face suspensions. Players found to be betting on their own teams face the potential for permanent loss of eligibility.
Report: Thousands of Bets Placed
According to the report, Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of small wagers on various sports using a mobile app. Notably, the disclosures reveal that Sorsby bet on Indiana Hoosiers games while a redshirt freshman in 2022.
While none of these wagers involved games he played in, the admission complicates his path to retaining NCAA eligibility. Texas Tech has not provided a timetable for his return, though the university confirmed it is offering full support to the quarterback.
Sorsby, who has already played four collegiate seasons, is coming off a highly productive campaign at Cincinnati, where he threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and just five interceptions across 24 appearances.
2,800 Yards Passing
Sorsby was slated to be the starter this season at Texas Tech and was projected by some to be a high-end NFL Draft pick in 2027. He was also projected to be one of the highest paid college football players, at $5 million this year at Texas Tech.
Sorsby was named to the 2025 All-Big 12 Second Team and joined the Red Raiders through the transfer portal last winter. Cincinnati is suing the quarterback for $1 million for alleged breach of contract after the transfer to Texas Tech. Sorsby has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
All-Big 12 Second Team
Texas Tech was projected by some to return to the college football playoffs. That’s all up in the air with the Sorsby news. Backup quarterback Will Hammond is recovering from an ACL tear suffered in October.
The NCAA last year agreed on a rule change that would have allowed college athletes to bet on professional sports only. That was rescinded by two-thirds of Division I member schools.
The NCAA is investigating Sorsby’s gambling, ESPN reported.
