Offset Faces Default Judgment in Detroit Casino Suit After Missing Deadline

Key Points

  • Offset faces a potential default judgment after missing the court deadline to respond to a lawsuit filed by MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit
  • The casino sued the rapper over an unpaid $100,000 gambling marker from March 2024 that bounced due to insufficient funds, seeking up to double the original amount
  • Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Qiana Denise Lillard ordered MotorCity to submit a motion for default judgment, with a deadline set for Oct. 23, 2026

Rapper Offset is facing a default judgment in his legal dispute with MotorCity Casino Hotel after missing a key court filing deadline, according to a Detroit federal judge. With no response filed by the defense, the court is now positioned to rule on the casino’s claims without the artist’s input.

A Sept. 11, 2026 scheduling order from Wayne County Circuit Court, posted to X by @DocumentTingz, shows Judge Qiana Denise Lillard ruled that Offset—whose legal name is Kiari Cephus—was properly served with the lawsuit but never filed an answer.

As a result, the judge directed MotorCity Casino Hotel to file a default entry and submit a motion for a default judgment. No final judgment has been entered, and Offset has not been found liable.

Off the Marker

MotorCity sued the Atlanta rapper on March 30, alleging he failed to repay a $100,000 credit line opened during a March 2024 visit. According to court filings, Offset signed a casino marker tied to his personal checking account, allowing the venue to draft funds directly.

When MotorCity tried to collect, the withdrawal bounced because of insufficient funds.

The lawsuit claims breach of contract, fraud, and violations of Michigan’s bad check statute, which allows plaintiffs to seek double the unpaid marker amount plus legal fees. When the suit went public in April, a representative for Offset told TMZ the parties were “working toward a resolution.” However, court records confirm no formal answer was ever submitted.

Opened in 1999 in Detroit’s former Wonder Bread bakery, MotorCity Casino Hotel was fully acquired by Marian Ilitch in 2005. Its signature 400-room, car-themed hotel tower was added in 2007.

Under Michigan court rules, entering a default strips a defendant of their right to contest the claims unless a judge agrees to set it aside. To lift a default, Offset would need to demonstrate good cause for missing the deadline and present a credible legal defense.

More Gambling Trouble

This new development comes as Offset’s gambling has drawn unwanted new attention. On Oct. 5, TMZ released video of him arguing with staff at a high‑limit blackjack table inside a Paris casino. In the clip, Offset said he was betting up to $20,000 per hand and claimed he had won about $200,000. The dispute centered on other players allegedly being allowed to take a seat he believed was his.

Offset has also faced unrelated accusations about gambling debts. Rapper Lil Tjay has said Offset owes him $10,000, and former NFL receiver Dez Bryant has claimed an unpaid $8,000 wager. Neither allegation is connected to the MotorCity lawsuit.

MotorCity’s motion for default judgment is scheduled for an Oct. 23 hearing. Unless Offset intervenes before then, the casino could secure a binding financial judgment without defense input.
