The latest installment of Netflix’s fast-turnaround documentary series Instadocs is diving into one of the most explosive corners of modern finance and trading: prediction markets.

The episode, “The Prediction Games,” premieres Sunday (July 26), just days after more than $5.6 billion was traded on the World Cup final through these platforms—a staggering figure that underscores how mainstream the phenomenon has become.
Prediction markets allow users to legally buy and sell contracts on the outcome of almost anything: global sports events, elections, geopolitical conflicts, weather patterns, and even pop culture events like Taylor Swift’s wedding.
Tens of millions of people now participate, drawn by the promise of fast payouts and the thrill of “calling the future” before anyone else.
The new doc positions viewers inside that frenzy, examining how the markets work, who profits, and what happens when the incentives to win collide with real‑world consequences.
Easy Money, Hard Questions
The stakes are high: with participants occasionally pressuring journalists to publish misleading information, hackers manipulating digital metrics like Spotify streams, and online communities attempting to steer public narratives for financial gain, does this pursuit of easy millions make reality itself a target for manipulation?
Has the so‑called “wisdom of crowds” morphed into something closer to mob pressure?
Even the documentary’s trailer has stirred controversy. CNN reporter Marshall Cohen posted on social media Thursday (July 23) noting that though the episode was purportedly filmed on July 19 in Las Vegas, prediction markets have been banned for Nevada-based users since March under a court order.
“Where and when did they do these trades?” Cohen’s tweet concluded.
