James Robert Hall, 39, of Holly, Oakland County, has also been charged with unlawful driving away in a motor vehicle and larceny in a building in connection with the death of Kristine Lynn Hall, 59, who was found suffocated in her home on Nov. 25, 2025.

Following his arrest on Tuesday, Hall told police that he had argued with his mother on the day of her death and snapped when she berated him for his “life choices” and for “not amounting to anything.” Hall said he climbed on top of her and used a pillow to smother her, according to a statement from the Holly Police Department (HPD).

After she died, he took her money, jewelry, and car, and drove 140 miles to Kalamazoo, Mich., where he rented a room and used the stolen money to gamble at a local casino, he admitted.

Victim’s Brother Found Body

Kristine Hall’s body was found the next day by her brother, who stopped by the house after she failed to return his calls. The brother said they had arranged to meet up that day, and her silence was unusual.

Finding her vehicle missing and the doors locked, he forced open a rear door. Inside, he discovered his sister’s body, fully clothed, on her bed.

The brother told police that Hall had been living with his mother for a couple of months and that Kristine Hall was scared of her son and slept with her bedroom door locked. Shortly after, investigators learned from other family members that Hall had spoken to his father and admitted to killing his mother.

Meanwhile, in Kalamazoo, local police were called to a party store after the clerk had reported a man using the store’s phone had mentioned he was thinking about killing himself. Officers discovered Hall in the parking lot inside his mother’s car.

He immediately confessed to murdering his mother, according to the HPD statement.

Held Without Bond

On November 26, the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Kristine Hall’s death was homicide by strangulation and suffocation.

Hall is being held without bond at the Oakland County Jail.

“James Hall was angry his mother was parenting him … so he killed her. He took the life … that gave him life,” HDP Chief Jerry Narsh said in a statement. “Then he took her money, her jewelry, and her vehicle because he was challenged on his life choices. Then he went to a casino.”
