The high volume was heavily driven by the final week of the FIFA World Cup, according to GeoComply co-founder and CEO Anna Sainsbury.

“As a Canadian company, this one is close to home,” Sainsbury said in a statement. “Albertans were eager to expand their choices of safe, regulated ways to play, and the final matches of the World Cup gave us an immediate look at the market in action.”

Strong Alberta Market Debut

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market officially launched on July 13, 2026. As of July 22, 36 operators had completed registration with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) and executed commercial agreements with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC). Currently, 22 platforms are live in the province.

While GeoComply did not disclose its exact client count in the province, the vendor confirmed it services “more than a dozen” live platforms. Geolocation checks are triggered every time a user logs in or attempts to place a wager.

World Cup Final Fuels Player Surge

The opening week coincided directly with the climax of the World Cup, which capped off on Sunday, July 19, with Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina

According to GeoComply, activity spiked sharply during match windows. The single highest surge occurred during the final, recording a peak of over 53,000 geolocation checks—with the heaviest concentration coming from Edmonton and Calgary.

Across the entire opening week, more than 100,000 unique Albertans created accounts and engaged with licensed operators through GeoComply-enabled platforms.

GeoComply emphasized that these initial figures reflect an early snapshot of launch momentum and noted it will continue tracking geolocation data as the market matures.
