- BetMGM bettors say their bets were voided by the online sportsbook
- BetMGM says the bets were terminated due to an “obvious error”
- One bettor was made full despite the tech glitch
Two BetMGM bettors are speaking out against the online sportsbook run by MGM Resorts and Entain for allegedly terminating winning bets they placed.

In a story first published on CBS News Chicago, a BetMGM customer says the online sportsbook voided his bets that would have delivered a large financial windfall.
Chicago resident Mark Aiello told the media outlet that he made four $500 bets on the March 2 NBA game between the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers. His prop bet came with 350/1 odds, or +35000. The implied likelihood of such a bet winning is just 0.28%.
After each of the four bets went Aiello’s way, he thought he won hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, after opening his BetMGM app, he discovered that the sportsbook had voided the $2,000 in bets before the game tipped off.
‘Obvious Errors’
Washington, DC, CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported on a similar incident happening to Virginia resident Kris Benton where BetMGM also operates an online sportsbook. Benton, a school teacher in Fairfax County, claims he made several bets on the Netherlands vs. Vietnam Women’s World Cup soccer match after coming across attractive 66/1 odds.
Benton’s more than $3,000 in bets won $214,500. BetMGM voided Benton’s bet, too.
“These wagers were voided due to an obvious error,” BetMGM told both Aiello and Benton. “Obvious error of incorrect or inflated odds per the house rules.”
BetMGM makes every effort to ensure that we do not make any errors in prices offered or wagers accepted. However, if as a result of mechanical, technical, or human error, BetMGM offers, or a patron places, a wager in Obvious Error, BetMGM reserves the right to either settle winning wagers at the ‘correct price,’ as reasonably determined by BetMGM, or void any wagers placed in Obvious Error,” BetMGM’s House Rules state.
“BetMGM reserves the right, at its own discretion, to declare a wager void, totally or partly, if a wager has been offered, placed, and/or accepted containing an Obvious Error,” the Rules continue.
As is the case when a slot machine malfunctions and associated spins and wins are voided, BetMGM’s House Rules provide the house with similar immunity from technical errors. That doesn’t sit well with bettors who think they were cheated.
Most states where online sports betting is regulated require operators to submit filings with the relevant regulatory agency when bets are voided. Along with Illinois and Virginia, BetMGM is live for online sports betting in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Benton Made Full
After taking his story public, Benton says BetMGM reached out to him through their legal counsel. The sportsbook, while maintaining that the odds were offered in “obvious error,” agreed to make him full and provide the $214,500 payout.
My family and I are thrilled that BetMGM is holding themselves accountable. This is a life-changing moment for us and we want to sincerely thank the team at WSUA9 for being the first ones to share my story,” Benton said.
Benton says he plans to pay off his wife’s student loans and start a college fund for their daughter.
