The World Cup Teams Most Likely To Choke Under Pressure, According To Astrology

The World Cup is where heroes are born, but it is also where favorites fall apart.

Every iteration of the World Cup has seen heavily backed favorites enter into the tournament with huge expectations on their shoulders, only to crumble when the pressure reaches boiling point. But could some squads be more astrologically exposed to failure than others?

To find out, Casino.org analysed all 48 nations kicking of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, using an astrology-led data model built around star signs, player roles, leadership figures and knockout-stage pressure points.

The study, which examined 1,248 players and 48 managers, has ranked all nations on how likely they are to ‘choke’ in this year’s tournament and according to the data, Spain are the team most likely to choke under pressure.

Key Highlights

  • Spain rank as the team most likely to choke under pressure, with a 79.1% Pressure Failure Rating.
  • England rank second overall at 76.8%, while Argentina rank third with a 75.9% rating.
  • Germany rank fourth, only 0.1 percentage points behind Argentina, while Uruguay complete the Top 5.
  • The United States rank 13th overall, with a 71.3% Pressure Failure Rating.
  • Among the three host nations, the United States are the most likely to fold under the pressure, ahead of Mexico and Canada.
  • Mercury goes into retrograde on June 29, just as the World Cup enters the knockout stage, a period linked with “issues around teamwork, friendships and communication

Spain Named The World Cup’s Biggest Choke-Risk Team

Spain top the ranking with a 79.1% Pressure Failure Rating, making them the team most astrologically exposed to cracking under World Cup pressure.

Spain, who are considered to be one of the favorites at the tournament, will be one to watch closely. In football terms, they have the talent to win the biggest prize in world football. In astrological terms, however, they show the strongest all-round profile for succumbing to the pressure.

If a top team is going to wobble, lose its nerve, get its wires crossed or suffer a classic collapse when the tournament reaches crunch time, Spain are this year’s strongest astrological candidate.

Why Some Squads Are More Exposed Than Others

Expert astrologer Inbaal Honigman says some squads may be more vulnerable to pressure than others for two main reasons: the star signs within the squad and the changing position of the planets during the tournament.

Honigman explains that some signs, including adventurous Sagittarius and ambitious Capricorn, are naturally better suited to pressure.

“Those pressure-loving signs enjoy setting their targets and then going for it, and nothing will stop them,” she says.

According to Honigman, those signs can take pressure in their stride and show up with the same attitude regardless of the opponent, weather or stakes.

Other signs, such as Taurus and Scorpio, may feel pressure more deeply, but are less likely to let it change how they perform.

“The grounded sign of Taurus, for example, and the intense sign of Scorpio, can feel the stress, but not act on it,” she explains.

By contrast, Honigman says more sensitive signs, especially Libra and Cancer, can be more affected by the emotional swing of a major tournament.

“Their feelings rise and fall with the winds, and their mood changes their performance,” she says.

She adds that players born under more pressure-sensitive signs can still be incredible athletes, but may become a weak point when the emotional intensity rises.

“If one star crumbles under the heat, then the whole team could potentially follow,” Honigman says.

Why Cancer Placements Matter For Spain

Cancer is especially important to the ranking because Spain have the highest number of Cancer placements in the Top 10.

That aligns with Honigman’s view that Cancerian players can be more emotionally affected when pressure builds.

For Spain, that creates an interesting tension: a hugely talented squad, but one the astrology model suggests could be more vulnerable once the tournament moves from the group stage and into the intensity of the knockout rounds.

Honigman adds:

“For those two reasons, the team with the most Cancerians will be the one most likely to buckle under the pressure. That team happens to be Spain.”

Mercury Retrograde Hits At The Worst Possible Time

The tournament timing adds another layer to the findings.

During the World Cup, the Sun is in Gemini before moving into Cancer from June 21, where it stays for the rest of the tournament.

Honigman says this matters because “something special happens between the group stage and the knockout stage.”

Mercury, the planet of communication, turns retrograde on June 29, just as the World Cup enters its knockout rounds.

“This will impact the signs of Virgo and Gemini, which are governed by Mercury,” Honigman explains.

She adds that Cancerians are also affected, because Mercury will be in Cancer throughout the knockout stage.

In astrology, Mercury retrograde is associated with communication issues, social tension, delayed decisions and old arguments resurfacing.

“Mercury retrograde, in astrology, is quite a stressful period, causing issues around teamwork, friendships and communication,” Honigman says.

In football terms, the astrology suggests this could be the kind of period where small communication problems, team tension or overthinking become much more costly.

Where Do The United States Rank?

The United States sit just outside the Top 10, ranking 13th overall with a 71.3% Pressure Failure Rating.

That gives the USMNT the highest pressure-failure score of the three host nations.

Host Nation Overall Rank Pressure Failure Rating
United States 13 71.3%
Mexico 21 68.8%
Canada 32 65.1%

Conclusion

The World Cup is never just about talent. It is about timing, pressure, belief and whether a team can keep itself together when the tournament turns ruthless.

Spain may have the quality to win it all, but is it enough?

With Mercury retrograde arriving just as the knockout rounds begin, the stars suggest this World Cup could be especially dangerous for teams already carrying emotional baggage and the weight of their nations on their shoulders.

The tactics may be written on the whiteboard, but according to astrology, some squads could already have pressure written in the stars.

Methodology

Casino.org analysed all 48 nations competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The study covered 1,248 players and 48 managers, creating a final data pack of 1,296 player and coach rows.

Each player and manager was coded by date of birth and zodiac sign. The model then mapped those signs against player roles, goalkeeper status, leadership markers and key-player weighting.

Higher weighting was given to managers, goalkeepers, centre-backs, holding midfielders, key attacking players and leadership figures, because these roles are most exposed during high-pressure tournament moments.

The model also incorporated knockout-stage pressure points, squad-wide instability and Mercury retrograde timing.

Each team was given a final Pressure Failure Rating out of 100. This is an index score showing how strongly each team matched the model’s astrological pressure-failure signals. It does not represent a literal percentage chance of elimination.
