A regular Tuesday turned into a multi-million-dollar milestone for one lucky Hard Rock Bet player, who transformed a mere $0.20 jackpot fee into a staggering $1.94 million windfall.

Casinos and online gaming platforms, including sportsbooks, love to show and tout big wins. But often, the bet is considerable, say a $30 slot spin. This week, though, one lucky player on the Hard Rock Bet online casino in New Jersey was gambling small stakes when she hit a life-changing prize.

On Monday, May 11, at 5:27 pm ET, an online gambler named Deborah was playing the slot, Bag the Swag: Hold & Win. The title comes from Octoplay, a business-to-business developer of online casino games.

Deborah, of South Plainfield, was playing $1 spins on the game. But she was also risking 20 cents per spin on the jackpot function when the Mega tier was triggered. Deborah’s 20-cent stake ended up hitting the progressive online slot’s Mega Jackpot. Her prize: $1,942,272.47.

Deborah was the first player in New Jersey to ever hit the Mega Jackpot on the Hard Rock Bet iGaming platform.

“This is exactly the kind of moment our jackpot is built to deliver. Seeing Deborah become our first-ever Mega Jackpot winner in New Jersey is incredibly exciting for everyone at Hard Rock Bet,” said Rich Criado, VP of casino at Hard Rock Digital.

“Wins like this reinforce that every spin truly has the potential to change a player’s day — or even their life,” Criado added.

More Losers Than Winners

Of course, Hard Rock Bet and New Jersey’s other online casinos aren’t in the charity business.

The iGaming operators win much more than they lose, with gross revenue, or the amount of the bets that the online casinos kept, totaling $782.8 million in the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the New Jersey Division Of Gaming Enforcement (DGE).

Hard Rock Bet reported GGR of $51.9 million during the three months, ranking fifth in NJ behind FanDuel ($179.6M), DraftKings ($142.1M), BetMGM ($99.3M), and Caesars Palace ($55.8M).

Hard Rock Bet says a sports bettor also recently won more than $1 million on its online app. But that win, totaling $1.98 million, came on a six-leg $30.11 parlay that saw all six MLB players hit home runs on the same day.

New Jersey oddsmakers won $268.4 million from bettors this year through March. Almost all of the revenue, nearly $263 million, came from online bets.

Income Tax on Online Jackpot

Deborah in New Jersey won’t be keeping all of her $1,942,272.47. Deborah will need to pay federal and state income taxes on the win, and her home state has one of the highest personal income tax rates in the nation at 10.75%.

Unless the current federal tax law is amended, Deborah will only be able to deduct 90% of her gambling losses against her winnings.

The Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill trimmed the gambling deduction from 100% to 90%, though legislative efforts to restore the loss deduction remain in Congress.

If your loses are $200,000 and your wins are $100,000 can you deduct $180,000?

No -- only 90% of your winnings.
