‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Coming to Las Vegas’ Sphere in 2027

The second legacy movie to receive a Las Vegas Sphere immersive enhancement will be 1975’s Rocky Horror Picture Show, Sphere Entertainment announced on Tuesday, June 16. The premiere is planned for 2027.

The cult classic musical will time-warp into 2027 via special arrangement with 20th Century Studios and Primary Wave Music, which jointly oversee key elements of the film’s rights and music catalog. The project will follow the venue’s 2025 reimagining of The Wizard of Oz.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the story of a stranded couple (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) who seek help at a strange mansion, where they meet a flamboyant scientist (Tim Curry) whose creations unleash chaos and desire.

It became the unexpected biggest cult movie of all time, beginning its midnight-movie in April 1976 at the Waverly Theater in New York City and playing continuously throughout the U.S. ever since.

Notes from the Lab

As with The Wizard of Oz, Sphere Entertainment says “advanced technologies” were used to increase the quality and size of the original film so it suits the Sphere’s curved, 160,000 square-foot interior display.

This is likely to include AI‑driven super‑resolution, color restoration, and image reconstruction designed to preserve the original cinematography while dramatically increasing clarity. The remastering process is also likely to involve selectively expanding certain scenes, and adding characters who were not originally present due to closeup use.

“Through Sphere Studios, we are building a slate of original experiences that push the boundaries of technology and storytelling for this new medium, while always keeping the audience at the center of the experience,” said Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan in a statement. “Since The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in 1975, it redefined audience participation and became a cultural phenomenon. With Sphere, we have the opportunity to take that spirit of immersion to an entirely new level.”

The Sphere version is almost certain to incorporate live elements, props, and callbacks traditionally associated with midnight screenings. For instance, like foam apples fall from the ceiling when the talking apple trees hurl apples at Dorothy and the Scarecrow in Sphere’s The Wizard of Oz, expect rice (or a safer facsimile) during the wedding of Ralph Hapschatt (Jeremy Newson) to Betty Munroe (Hilary Labow).
