The 2026/27 NHL regular season commenced on September 29th. So, traders will continue to buy and sell contracts on who will follow in the Carolina Hurricanes’ footsteps and lift the Stanley Cup next June.
In the aftermath of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final (which saw Carolina defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4 games to 2), the Hurricanes opened with a win probability of 49% for the new campaign.
However, that figure has since dropped by 37 percentage points to just 12%. This has remained steady after 13 wins in 18 matches (.722), during which they’ve plundered 69 goals. Rivals Colorado Avalanche have gone 9-6-2 (.529) in their opening fixtures. The franchise has struck 68 goals across these 17 games and now has a win probability of 10%.
Pricing will become increasingly volatile as the new season continues, so now is the ideal time to start identifying and trading undervalued outcomes. Here’s a selection of my top market picks.

Minnesota Wild Odds – Embracing Salary Cap Advantages and Underpricing
“Minnesota Wild” | “Yes” at 7.9¢ | 8% Chance
Wild reached the second playoff round last season, having compiled a .560 win rate in the Western Conference. They were ultimately outclassed by Colorado, as they continued to struggle with a crippling salary cap that followed the 2021 buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.
However, up to $15 million in dead cap space has now been removed from Minnesota’s balance, and the franchise has wasted no time in extending the contracts of its key performers. These deals include a $17 million, eight-year arrangement for precocious winger Kirill Kaprizov. He notched four goals and 11 assists during a stellar postseason in 2025/26.
General manager Bill Guerin has prioritized securing his core, including Kaprizov and elite young defenseman Brock Faber. The latter signed a long-term $68 million extension worth $8.5 million annually).
Wild have gone 12-3-3 (.666) in their opening 18 fixtures, winning eight out of 11 matches since October 13th. This solid run of form has contributed to a price hike of 58% since October 8th, although Minnesota are arguably still undervalued at the current benchmark of 7.9¢. The aforementioned Kaprizov has already contributed 16 goals and 14 assists in his 18 appearances so far.
The youthful nature of the roster will also drive up sentiment if the team continues to perform well during the fall, creating a scenario where the price could reach 14¢ to 15¢ by midseason. You could then sell for an ROI of between 77.22% and 89.87%, even if you buy now.
Colorado Avalanche Odds – Offering Elite Firepower and an Arbitrage Opportunity
“Colorado Avalanche” | “Yes” at 10¢ | 10% Chance
Avalanche had a 50% win probability when the market opened on June 13th. However, this figure has since dropped significantly and settled back at 10%.
The average sportsbook odds currently imply a 12.5% probability of Colorado winning the Stanley Cup, too, so the franchise stands out immediately as a potential value pick.
Then there’s the Avalanche offense. The team averaged 3.63 goals-per-game in 2025/26, with playmaker Nathan MacKinnon contributing 53 goals (and 74 assists) alone. Martin Necas also registered 100 points during the regular season, and this type of firepower is synonymous with Stanley Cup success.
This pair has already combined for 46 goal involvements in 13 games this season (16 goals and 30 assists). Winger Artturi Lehkonen has contributed 12 goals and five assists, too, with the Avalanche having scored eight, six, and seven goals against Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Calgary respectively.
Now is the ideal time to buy “Yes” shares in the Avalanche. The price is likely to increase as the regular season continues, with Colorado facing a favorable strength of schedule for the remainder of the campaign (.557). It also has the potential to peak quite quickly and create an exit point of up to 20¢ or even higher, so the current benchmark appears relatively discounted.

Florida Panther Odds – The Former Prediction Market Favorites
“Florida Panthers” | “Yes” at 8¢ | 7% Chance
The Panthers are still among the current frontrunners on Polymarket. This is despite the team recording a .487 win-rate in 2025/26 and failing to make the playoffs.
This is partially because of a solid summer draft, in which Florida used their capital to bring in Vilho Vahantalo, Ryder Cali, and Simas Ignatavicius (who was crowned Rookie of the Year in the Swiss National League last season and is an incredibly versatile player).
Under Paul Maurice, the Panthers are also renowned for their intense, high pressure game. This helps them to suffocate opponents and control the tempo during matches, while it can prove highly effective in the postseason when a higher level of physical contact is usually permitted.
However, this playing style is more strictly officiated during the regular season. It’s also highly demanding and increases the risk of burnout. Between February 2nd and April 15th last season, the Panthers went 12-15-1 (.428), while winning just three out of 16 on the road as they plummeted down the Eastern Conference.
The team’s current win probability of 7% has declined by two percentage points since October 14th. This followed heavy defeats against Ottawa and Pittsburgh, while the Panthers have gone 9-5-2 in 16 matches overall (.562). The Panthers also have the hardest remaining strength of schedule (.585) in the regular season with 12 games scheduled back-to-back.
The field size and parity in the NHL naturally caps implied probability values at between 20% to 25%, too, and an inconsistent run of form could quickly drive the Panthers price down further.
I’d recommend avoiding Florida for the time being, unless you want to speculate on the Panthers qualifying for the postseason.
Montreal Canadiens Odds – The Best Long Shot Pick
“Montreal Canadiens” | “Yes” at 5¢ | 5% Chance
In terms of potential long shot picks, I like the look of the Montreal Canadiens. They finished third in the Atlantic Division with a .585 win-rate in 2025/26, before progressing to the Eastern Conference final and suffering a 4-1 defeat to Carolina.
Ultimately, the Canadiens were let down by a porous defense, but this has been completely reconstructed by head coach Martin St. Louis. The franchise drafted four defensemen out of their eight total picks during the summer, while award-winning rookie Lane Hutson is now Montreal’s premier defensive player.
The franchise has also added veteran winger Chris Kreider, after his contract with the Anaheim Ducks was terminated. He has contributed 348 goals, 284 assists, and a total of 632 points across his 958 HNL appearances. So, he immediately adds depth and elite quality to Montreal’s attack, while his acquisition has helped drive the franchise’s “Yes” price up by 42.86% since September 15th overall.
If you bought in at the lower price of 3.5¢, I’d recommend holding your position. Between January 1st and the end of the 2025/26 regular season, the Canadiens went 27-12-4 and won .627 of their games. The team has gone 10-3-3 (.625) so far in 2026/27, and won seven of their last 10 regular season matches.
A sustained run of good form could see the price increase quickly to between 7¢ and 8¢ (or even beyond). Selling at 8¢ would deliver an ROI of 128.57%, which is excellent for a short-term position. You can even buy in now, with the discounted price offering a viable upside.
Just note that holding above 10¢ is inherently risky, as the trade may expose you to low liquidity and make it harder to sell.
The Last Word – Buying, Selling, and Creating Your Exit Strategy
As I’ve touched on, it’s rare for win probabilities to exceed 20% or 25% during the NHL regular season. This is due to the size of the field and the high level of competitiveness, which also makes it incredibly hard to predict the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup.
This is why identifying underpriced outcomes can prove invaluable, as this enables you to buy and flip your positions for a profit well before settlement and the end of the regular season. Just be sure to identify your ideal exit strategy and sell before being exposed to low liquidity.
Of course, holding onto shares can unlock much higher prices if your picks advance into the playoffs. However, this also incurs much greater risk and exposure, while tying up your capital for a longer period of time.
There are also other NHL markets to consider on Polymarket. You can trade the winners of the Western and Eastern Conferences, for example, or speculate on the identity of the Calder Trophy winner. These markets are available now to browse.
