  • Vegas Golden Knights host Anaheim Ducks in Game 2 tonight at T-Mobile Arena
  • Mitch Marner a prop betting favourite for Golden Knights
  • Vegas are a -160 betting favourite over Ducks

Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mitch Marner, who signed as a free agent with the Vegas Golden Knights last summer in a blockbuster move, is a subject of some major prop action as betting on the Golden Knights’ second round series against the Anaheim Ducks heats up.

Game 2 Tonight

The Ducks take on Golden Knights at 9:30 p.m. EST tonight in Game 2 of their NHL series, with the game at T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas. Las Vegas won Game 1 on Monday night, 3-1.

The Knights game is the last played of the two tonight but will probably be first in handle because of that positioning,” said Johnny Avello, Director of Race & Sports Operation at DraftKings. “The bettors like the home ice Knights as the line has moved from -162 to -166.”

At BetMGM, Golden Knights forward Ivan Barbashev is a most bet player prop, Over 0.5 Points (-118), as is the Ducks’ Cutter Gauthier Under 3.5 Shots (+100).

Marner 0.5 Assists Popular Prop

Also notable are most bet players to score a goal in Game 2: Pavel Dorofeyev +195, Gauthier +190 and Mitch Marner +230.

Ninety-nine per cent of bets are on Marner over 0.5 assist (-145). Marner has six assists in seven playoff games.

Marner spent ten years with the Maple Leafs and built a reputation for not showing up in the playoffs. Marner is looking to change the narrative, and been doing that so far.

Golden Knights Betting Favourites

The Golden Knights are -160 at BetMGM (47% of bets, 33% of handle), while the Ducks are at +135 (53% of bets, 67% of handle). That +1.5 Ducks Spread (-175) is seeing 69% of bets, 76% of handle.

Then there’s Vegas starting goalies Carter Hart. There were doubts all season about the state of the Golden Knights’ goaltending. Then they made a coaching change March 29 – firing Bruce Cassidy, hiring John Tortorella, who then went with Hart as his goalie. The team went 7-0-1 heading into the playoffs.

Hart has been outstanding in the playoffs – .910 save percentage, .965 in the last few games. Hart stopped 33 pucks in Game 1.

Hart Effect

“You can go either way with Carter Hart,” said Karry Shreeve, Head of Hockey at Caesars Sportsbook. “From a general NHL season workload, Hart has nothing to worry about, as he hasn’t even played in 30 games since joining VGK. At the other end of that blade is the fact that he hasn’t played this many consecutive games in years and is that something that does indeed play a factor. There aren’t many recent examples of his situation to compare it with.

“As always, the biggest factor will be how the team continues to perform in front of him. Certainly, trending towards YES, he can keep this up.”

Stanley Cup Futures

The Golden Knights have gone up against two non-public teams so far, he added – the Ducks, and the Utah Mammoth in Round 1.

“I understand the Edmonton Oilers are a public team, but I was surprised by how much love they received despite there being absolutely no value in any of their prices, whether for individual games or the series,” said Shreeve. “The Boston Bruins also received quite a bit of attention, with not much to back it up.”

Tortorella Effect

What’s the real impact of the Tortorella effect? How much is their playoff structure and zone time him versus the talent finally clicking?

“This is a tough one, too,” said Shreeve. “It would be completely unfair to give him zero credit. Wins are wins. Stacking wins is even more impressive. Is it totally fair to say these same runs of results couldn’t have happened with Cassidy in charge? I’m not entirely sold on that either.

“The facts remain that the Knights had a pretty soft schedule to end the season, played a Utah team that, as a group, had zero playoff experience, and it showed up in key moments, and currently are playing a Ducks squad with zero playoff experience as a group as well.

“What we do know is that Vegas is in the second round of the NHL playoffs and are favorites to advance to the Conference Finals. However, whoever you think should get credit can be up for debate.”

At Caesars, currently, the Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cup betting favourites, at +160, followed by the Carolina Hurricanes at +170, then the Golden Knights at 450.
