Las Vegas Sphere Reveals Surprise Next Residency in Video

In a video posted to social media by the Las Vegas Sphere on Wednesday morning, a sun-bleached blue rocking chair awaits someone on an idyllic island coast. Who might that someone be? A wave washes over the scene and deposits an acoustic guitar topped by a cowboy hat, suggesting pretty much the only candidate.

While reps for country star Kenny Chesney aren’t talking, in 2004, their client released a song called “Old Blue Chair” with the following lyrics…

“There’s a blue rocking chair sitting in the sand./
Weathered by the storms and well-oiled hands./
It sways back and forth with the help of the winds./
Seems to always be there, like an old trusted friend.”
The following year, Chesney released the album “Be As You Are (Songs From an Old Blue Chair),” whose cover featured Chesney sitting on a beach, leaning against a blue chair. And in 2013, Chesney released a line of rum called Blue Chair Bay.
Since opening with U2 in September 2023, the Sphere has hosted residencies by the Eagles, Phish, and Dead & Company. Its first non-rock act was electronic music artist Anyma from December 27 through January 11. Country has so far been an untapped market for James Dolan’s $2.3 billion concert venue.
Chesney — the four-time Entertainer of the Year winner at both the Country Music Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards — has the fan base to tap it. The Tennessee native’s “Sun Goes Down Tour” serenaded nearly 51K fans per stadium performance last year, second only in country music to Morgan Wallen’s 54,500.
The Sphere has a seating capacity of 17,500 for concerts, guaranteeing that ticket demand will far outstrip supply.

According to Billboard magazine, Chesney is set to make an “unknown announcement” on Thursday, January 16, during a visit to “The Today Show” in the 8 a.m. hour. That same day, he will appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
After the Eagles and Dead & Company finish tag-teaming weekend dates through May 17, the Sphere’s concert calendar is clear.
Then again, in February 2024, Beyonce teased a Sphere residency in a $50 million Super Bowl commercial for Verizon, which showed her on a metallic horse atop the globular concert venue.
“I thought you meant in the Sphere!” actor Tony Hale yelled at Beyonce while climbing the outside of the venue.
“No, on the Sphere!” she retorted.
So far, that residency has yet to materialize.
