Blockchain.com is the latest major cryptocurrency platform aiming to tap into the booming U.S. prediction market industry.

The Dallas-based company announced today it has filed applications for Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) and Designated Contract Market (DCM) licenses with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)—the federal regulator overseeing binary and event contract exchanges in the U.S.
FCM permits, which are obtained through the National Futures Association (NFA), are essential for exchange operators because those licenses allow holders to process derivatives-based trades and custody client funds.
Registered with the CFTC, DCMs are open to both institutional and retail traders and are eligible to clear trades involving futures, options and swaps, meaning DCMs can operate as prediction markets. The CFTC classifies event contracts as swaps.
Credible Prediction Market Player
Beyond its prediction market initiative, Blockchain.com is applying to offer cryptocurrency derivatives to U.S. customers. The company already manages perpetual futures (“perps”) and event contracts for international clients.
“Earlier this year, Blockchain.com announced self-custodied prediction market offerings and perpetual futures trading for users in eligible markets around the world,” said the company in a statement. “The CFTC license applications are a step toward bringing similar prediction markets and regulated trading offerings directly to U.S. users in the Blockchain.com app.”
Industry metrics suggest Blockchain.com could establish a meaningful foothold in a U.S. prediction market sector that has historically been dominated by a small group of incumbents.
Operating across more than 70 countries, Blockchain.com reports processing more than $1.1 trillion in crypto transactions and hosting over 95 million wallets across 44 million verified accounts.
Crypto and Prediction Markets Converge
As the prediction market industry expands, digital asset platforms and event contract venues are increasingly merging.
On the retail front, Blockchain.com is the latest crypto brokerage to target event contracts. If the CFTC approves its DCM and FCM filings, the firm will join Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN), Crypto.com, Gemini Space Station Inc. (NASDAQ: GEMI) and Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) among major crypto-adjacent brokerages offering regulated prediction products.
Privately held Blockchain.com is reportedly preparing for a $500 million initial public offering (IPO) that could value the business between $4 billion and $6 billion.
