10 Memorable Movie Quotes About “The Odds”
We all have our favorite movie quotes, but we get super excited when we hear quotes about “odds” – after all, it’s what we do! So, we collected the top 10 best quotes about odds, gambling and chance, and we’re proudly sharing them with you. Just don’t blame us when you can’t get them out of your head!
1. The Empire Strikes Back:
The Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, has a sequence where Han Solo barrels the Millennium Falcon into an asteroid field to escape the Empire. It’s then that C-3PO decides this would be a great moment to do some math.
C-3PO: “But sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to one.”
HAN SOLO: “Never tell me the odds.”
Let us put those odds into perspective; bookmakers were offering odds of 5,000 to 1 of the world ending on December 21, 2012. Despite those long odds, Solo miraculously beats the house and navigates his ship to safety.
2. Hunger Games:
A recent box office and book selling smash, Hunger Games can best be summarized by the phrase, “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.”
The odds of being picked by lottery to take part in the games was one out of thousands. Even if you were unlucky enough to win this evil lottery and had to represent your district at the annual Hunger Games, you only had a 1 in 24 chance of staying alive, because you had to face 24 other contestants.
3. The Hangover:
As with most trips to Las Vegas, the boys in The Hangover kept finding themselves on the losing end of every deal. Their experience was best summed up by this epic quote from Ed Helms (Stu):
STU: “I’ll tell you another thing … 6 to 1 odds are our car is beat to shit.”
PHIL: “Stu, not now.”
STU: “Seriously, how much do you wanna bet? It’s like fucked up beyond all recognition?”
Yes, mirroring the same odds as hitting a pair in blackjack (6 to 1), Stu doesn’t necessarily have high hopes … but, fortunately, he was wrong. The crew found the car and got to enjoy a happy ending!
4. Dumb & Dumber:
Because Dumb & Dumber is perhaps one of the greatest comedies of all time, we’re proud to feature two quotes about odds from this fine film. For starters, we have this gambling gem… showing just how dumb the duo can really be.
LLOYD: “I’ll bet you 20 bucks I can get you gambling before the end of the day!?”
HARRY: “No way.”
LLOYD: “I’ll give you 3 to 1 odds?”
LLOYD: “5 to 1?”
LLOYD: “10 to 1?”
HARRY: “You’re on.”
Ironically, even though Lloyd gives Harry progressively more favorable odds, for something he has total control over, both are too stupid to realize the bet could be called!
5. Dumb & Dumber:
As our second pearl of wisdom from Lloyd Christmas of Dumb & Dumber, we see signs of a rather optimistic gambler.
LLOYD: “What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me ending up together? … What are my chances?”
MARY: “Not good.”
LLOYD: “You mean, not good, like one out of a hundred?”
MARY: “I’d say, more like one out of a million.”
LLOYD: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance?”
Amazing. Even with the odds stacking impossibly high against him, with odds that no wise man would ever agree to, you’ve got to appreciate Lloyd’s willingness to look the dealer in the eye and to let it ride!
Like any good writer who’s dealing with writer’s block, Jack Manfred (Clive Owen’s character who was an aspiring writer) switched gears and took a job as a croupier at a casino. That said, while being in the lion’s den of gambling, he quickly realized that gambling is more than meets the eye.
JACK: “Gambling’s not about money … Gambling’s about not facing reality, ignoring the odds.”
MARION: “I must be a fool – I never think about the odds.”
7. Princess Bride:
Okay, we admit this doesn’t specifically have to do with “odds” but it’s a hilariously great scene that shows that luck, is luck, is luck. Even with 50/50 odds, let this famous conversation show that there really is no rhyme or reason when it comes to games of chance. Oh, and never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
Of course, we cannot discuss a list of gambling movies without drawing at least one card from Rounders – the poker movie to end all poker movies. Though he gets caught up in the dark side of the game, Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) still manages to keep his wits about him, as he makes a rather poignant (and self-reflective) observation.
“I’ve often seen these people, these squares at the table, short stack and long odds against them. All their outs gone. One last card in the deck that can help them. I used to wonder how they could let themselves get into such bad shape and how the hell they thought they could turn it around.”
9. Willy Wonka:
When the mysterious chocolate maker, Mr. Willy Wonka, sends the world into a furry over the chance to win a tour of his secretive factory by finding one of the five golden tickets, hidden within his millions of candy bars, the odds were definitely not very favorable for the poverty-stricken Charlie Bucket – but Grandpa Joe was a believer that chance could be controlled.
CHARLIE: “I’ve got the same chance as anybody else, haven’t I?”
GRANDPA JOE: “You’ve got more, Charlie, because you want it more.”
While other kids were buying thousands of bars, in the hopes of bettering their odds, Charlie beats the house by striking gold on just his third attempt – a fairytale feat that is more miraculous than winning the Powerball.
Oh, just for fun, we thought we’d include this brilliant explanation of percentages from the same movie. If ever you’ve had questions about percentages, odds or chance, don’t go to this guy for advice!
10. Casino Royale:
Last but not least, is a quote from one of the greatest gambling movies of all time and certainly in the last decade, Casino Royale (2006). Coined by Mathis, after watching the chief of police get arrested for evidence he forged, he smirks, “I think your odds are improving, Mr. Bond.”
We hope you’ve enjoyed this list of quotes about odds, chance, probability and gambling. Of course, there are certainly some lessons to be learned here so play smart and have fun!
