The English Beat, One of Our All-Time Favorite Bands, is Performing Free at Hard Rock

A most epic band, The English Beat, will perform free at Hard Rock Cafe at the Hard Rock Hotel on Jan. 17, 2014. Yes, free. We don’t make errors about things like that.

The appearance by The English Beat, referred to by fans as “The Beat,” or by superfans at just “The,” is part of the Hard Rock Cafe’s free live music program, something we were not aware existed until 14 seconds ago.

The English Beat
Oh, hell-to-the-yes.

The English Beat exploded onto the British music scene in the 1970s and became one of the most influential bands of the British ska movement, at least that’s what it says in the news release.

It also says, “The Beat’s music fuses ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock, to a very danceable beat led by charismatic frontman Dave Wakeling and supported by a very tight band.” (Word of caution: When it comes to tight bands, you have to be careful not to cut off your circulation.)

The English Beat’s singer, Dave Wakeling, went on to front another band whose music we love, General Public.

Dave Wakeling
Still rocking. Or ska-ing, if that’s a thing.

Mostly, we just love this song, among many others.

Admission to the Jan. 17 show at Hard Rock Cafe, a short 48-minute stroll from the Hard Rock Hotel, is free, as we mentioned.

Hard Rock Cafe
You can’t miss it. There’s a big-ass guitar out front.

Doors open at 9:00 p.m. We’ll be there, pretending to be too cool to know every single word to every single song.
