What is online blackjack?

As the name suggests, online blackjack is simply a virtual version of the popular card game. Blackjack is one of the most well-loved casino games, due to it being a relatively easy game to play. It's also known for having the best odds in gambling.

Blackjack casinos are similarly self-explanatory. These are sites where you can play free and real money blackjack games, all from the comfort of your own home. Most US casinos will offer at least a few blackjack variants. Use this page to learn more about how to get started at the best blackjack casinos in the US.

Getting started with online blackjack

One of the main reasons why online blackjack is so popular in the US is because it's so easy to learn, to play, and to get good at. Follow the steps below to get started playing real money blackjack today.

  1. 1
First, register at one of our listed casinos. You'll need an account to play blackjack online for real money in the US.
  2. 2
Next, deposit money into your account. Depending on the casino you choose, you can do this via payment methods such as debit card, e-check, PayPal, and other e-wallets.
  3. 3
Decide which blackjack variant you want to play. Each of our top blackjack casinos offers a wide variety of games with different minimum bet sizes, additional rules and more. Browse the casino lobby or head over to the live casino section, if live dealer blackjack is more your thing.
  4. 4
Once the game begins, you and the dealer will each be dealt two cards. The aim is to beat the dealer by getting a score as close as possible to, but not over, 21. Face cards are worth 10, and Aces can be worth either one or 11.
  5. 5
You can now hit, meaning draw another card, or stand, meaning stick with the cards you have. Remember if you go over 21, you go bust and instantly lose the game.
  6. 6
The dealer will now reveal their cards. The winner is simply the one who got closer to 21. If you have the same score, it’s called a push, and your bet is returned.

Find the best blackjack casino bonuses for US players

Online casinos are always keen to impress new players, so you’ll often find casinos looking to entice you in with a sign-up or welcome bonus. Usually, this bonus is a percentage of your first deposit.

Finding a blackjack bonus can be a little more difficult than a casino bonus for slots, for example. This is due to the game's low house edge. Luckily, we've come up with a checklist you can use to ensure your bonus is worthwhile.

  • Read the T&Cs carefully: Many casinos make blackjack games exempt from welcome bonuses. If this is the case, it will be clearly stated in the terms and conditions. At the best blackjack casinos at least one blackjack variant will be eligible however.
  • Consider the wagering requirements: Wagering requirements tell you how much you’ll need to wager before your bonus money is turned into withdrawable funds. Wagering requirements are usually shown as a multiplier of the bonus + deposit amounts, such as 30x. Blackjack bonuses can have higher wagering requirements, so it's worth considering if clearing them is realistic before picking up an offer.
  • Check out the game contributions: As mentioned earlier, blackjack has a low house edge. This means that casinos may give you a lower game contribution percentage for blackjack than other games. For example, slots may contribute 100% to wagering requirements, whilst blackjack may only contribute 30%. Live games also often have lower contributions. Anything over 1% for live games is considered fair whilst over 25% is quite generous.
  • Look for blackjack tournaments: With all the points above considered, you may question whether it's even worth claiming a blackjack bonus. The good news is that many US casinos run blackjack tournaments. These are events created especially for blackjack fans, and you'll play against other players instead of the casino. The aim is to end up with the most chips at the end of the tournament. Always check the T&Cs before you enter and watch out for tournament entry fees.

Types of blackjack

Online casinos offer many different types of blackjack games. Check out the most popular real money blackjack variants in the US below.

  • Blackjack Surrender

This version of the game is played out in the same way as the original version, except with Blackjack Surrender the player has the option to surrender after the first two cards are dealt. If this option is taken, the player will recover half of his/her stake.
  • Blackjack Switch

In Blackjack Switch, you play two hands at the same time. After the first four cards are dealt you have the option to switch the top card from each hand to try and improve your chances of winning. A Super Match is a side bet in this variant which pays out if the first four cards dealt to the player contain a pair, two pairs, or three of a kind.
  • Live Blackjack

In this variation, online players can enjoy the real casino experience as they play against a live dealer in real time, via video link. Live blackjack is a great option for those who prefer to play online games but want to experience the social interaction and thrills of a land-based casino.
  • Atlantic City

Originating in casinos based in Atlantic City, this version of blackjack has slightly different rules to the original. For example, the dealer can stand on 17 and they can also look to see if they’ve got a blackjack. Players can also split their cards up to a maximum of three times.
  • European Blackjack

European blackjack is another type of blackjack game which uses only two decks of cards. There’s no hole card in the European variation of the game either. Doubling down is also restricted. In European blackjack, players can only do this if they have a hand of 9, 10 or 11, whereas in American players can do so whenever they wish.
  • Perfect Blackjack

This variation on the game of real money blackjack allows players to make a side bet on whether either they or the dealer (or both) will be dealt two of the same cards. If the first two cards are a ‘perfect’ pair – meaning that they are a pair in the exact same suit – then the payout can be as much as 25 to 1.

Top 5 blackjack games for odds and payouts

Although blackjack has a much lower house edge than other casino games, different blackjack variants have different payout rates. Use the guides below to learn the basics of blackjack at a glance. Refer back to these when you play blackjack online and you'll never get stuck.

What are the abbreviations I see at online blackjack casinos?

For the sake of brevity, most of the table rules in online blackjack are abbreviated. The most common ones are:

  • BSE: Basic Strategy Edge meaning you can get better odds using your basic strategy
  • DOA: Double Down on any of your initial cards
  • D10/11: You can only double down on 10s and 11s
  • DAS: Double down is only allowed when you split a pair.
  • ESR: Early surrender allowed. You won't find this often, but when you do you can surrender your initial hand when the dealer has a natural blackjack (21).
  • H17: This means that when the dealer has 17 (as soft hit) he must hit.
  • LSR: Late surrender. You can surrender your hand, only losing half of your bet when the dealer gets a non-natural blackjack (21).
  • O/U: You can bet over and under thirteen
  • RSA: You can re-split Aces
  • S17: The dealer must stand on soft 17 (stick on 17).

Common blackjack terms

Bust: If the total of your cards exceeds 21 then you are said to have “bust” and your hand is folded and your bet is lost. The dealer can also bust under the same circumstances.

Hit: Whenever you draw a new card to add to your hand you are said to “hit”.

Insurance: Insurance is a side bet, of up to half your original bet and can be made when the dealer's "upcard" is an ace. If the dealer has a natural 21 your insurance bet pays out at 2:1.

Push: A push is a tied hand that causes your original bet to be returned to you.

Surrender: Surrendering is when you “fold.” Some tables allow surrender and some do not. This might sound negative, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. When early surrender is allowed, you can surrender your hand if the dealer is showing an Ace and only lose half your bet instead of all of it.

How much are cards worth in blackjack?

Number cards (2-10)Their numerical value (i.e. 3 is worth 3)

Expert tips for winning real money playing blackjack online

Whilst some luck is required to play blackjack online, the game requires skill and knowledge too. Aside from specific strategies, smart decisions can also increase your chances of winning. Use our expert tips below to learn how to play blackjack like a pro.

  • Learn basic blackjack strategy

Basic blackjack strategies are worth their weight in gold, and some really do give you the edge. Choose a strategy and try to learn it inside out.
  • Manage your bankroll

If there’s one tip that applies to all real money gambling, it’s this one. Make sure you don’t bet money unless you know you can afford to lose it. Don’t double down if you’re a beginner, it can be risky.
  • Don’t make huge wagers on one bet

Betting more than half your stack at once is reckless play, and it always pays to use your head in blackjack. Bet in a responsible way and you’ll be rewarded.
  • Always split aces and eights

The best blackjack casino players know when to split their hand. In general, you should always split aces and eights. A pair of aces can leave you with 2 or 12, while splitting them gives you two shots at 21. Similarly, two eights leaves you hanging at 16, a position no player wants to be in.
  • Don't take insurance

In general, insurance isn't a great option as it increases the house edge. We recommend avoiding this option, particularly if you're a beginner.

If you're serious about playing, you need to play the math. In every situation you need to consider the dealer's up card and the value of your cards, and make the best informed decision. Play consistently, play the math, and your odds of winning will increase.
