Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Patrick Dumont has assumed control of the family’s 73% stake in the NBA Dallas Mavericks. According to an initial report by ESPN, billionaire Miriam Adelson transferred the ownership position to Dumont and her daughter, Sivan Ochshorn, in October.

Adelson, the widow of Sheldon Adelson, who founded and led Las Vegas Sands for decades before he died in January 2021, is among the world’s richest women with a net worth of around $32 billion. In December 2023, Adelson paid billionaire Mark Cuban $3.5 billion for 73% of the Mavericks, naming Dumont and Ochshorn as her co-buyers, with Dumont assuming the role of team governor.

Ochshorn is the daughter of Dr. Adelson from her first marriage to Ariel Ochshorn, whom she divorced in 1986 and married Sheldon five years later. Dumont and Ochshorn now control the 73% stake in the NBA franchise, with Adelson removing herself from the ownership group.

Terms of the arrangement were not disclosed. NBA league owners did not need to approve of the ownership structure, as Dumont and Ochshorn were already recognized as majority owners. Cuban retains a 27% share.

Long-Game Focus

While Cuban has expressed remorse about selling a controlling stake in the Mavs to the casino tycoons, Dumont insists the family has no interest in relocating the team to Las Vegas. The Sands executive pledges that the Mavericks are staying in Dallas.

It’s really about long-term investment in the city of Dallas,” Dumont told ESPN. “The Dumont family is really committed to building what we hope is the best arena in the NBA, a really significant investment in the city that will help create the new 40-year home for the Dallas Mavericks.”

Dumont said he “loves” Cuban and understands his frustrations after the team went 65-99 over the past two seasons and made one of the most shocking trades in NBA history by shipping Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

“He’s just a super passionate Mavs fan, and he’s frustrated. I respect it. We’re going to hopefully do him proud. That’s my goal–to make all of our Mavs fans super proud about the success of the team and win a championship,” Dumont said.

Cuban and Dumont previously discussed building a casino resort to accompany a new Mavs arena, should Texas lawmakers put a constitutional amendment before voters to allow slot machines, table games, and sports betting.

While Dumont pledges to invest in a new home for the Mavericks regardless of whether casino resorts are legalized, the odds of commercial gambling passing improved this week after Democrats won the Texas governor and lieutenant governor’s offices.

Mavs Payroll

The Dallas Mavericks’ payroll for the 2026-27 NBA season is $191.1 million. That ranks 23rd among the 30 teams. With his mother-in-law, Dumont is among the top five richest team owners.

Through eight games, the Mavs are 4-4, tied for last in the Southwest Division.
