The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) owns the property, and for 20 years Great Canadian Entertainment has operated it on NSGC’s behalf. There’s also a Casino Nova Scotia Sydney, which Great Canadian Entertainment also operates for NSGC.

The one in Halifax, on Upper Water Street, has over 500 slots , live table games like blackjack and roulette, poker rooms, plus dining locations like 3Sixty buffet and lounge, and entertainment at the Bruce Guthro Theatre, with live shows. The Sydney location, on George St., has slots, electronic tables, even a golf simulator. Dartmouth Crossing is a commercial real estate development in Dartmouth, part of the Halifax Regional Municipality.

New Casino Nova Scotia by 2029

According to a statement, NSGC wants to sell the Halifax casino property to a third party for “the best possible value”. The new Dartmouth Crossing casino will be purpose built, that Great Canadian will construct. NSGC provided Great Canadian with notice that this is what it has intended to do.

As part of the plan, the province intends to lease-back the existing facility from any third party buyer so that Great Canadian can continue to operate the casino until the Dartmouth Crossing facility is completed, expected to be in 2029.

So the objective, from the province and company’s perspective, is a seamless transition for the casino clientele, with as few interruptions as possible.

Casino News: Seamless Transition is the Goal

“We recognize the Province’s strong desire to unlock the full value of the property where our Halifax operation currently sits, and we are pleased to move forward with an exciting, refreshed vision for gaming entertainment in the Nova Scotia market,” stated Matthew Anfinson, CEO, Great Canadian Entertainment.

There is much work to undertake to bring this vision to life, so it is very much ‘business as usual’ for our valued team members and guests at Casino Nova Scotia’s Halifax location. Today’s announcement marks a major milestone for Casino Nova Scotia and the Province; we are very proud to continue to invest and operate in Nova Scotia.”

Great Canadian and NSGC also announced the extension of their operating agreement, for 25 years, following the planned 2029 opening of the new casino in Dartmouth Crossing. If the current plan to build a new casino does not proceed, for any reason, Casino Nova Scotia will continue operations under the current agreement.
