In a nation where online casino dominates the private sector igaming market, much the same is happening with the provincial lottery corporations, if the Atlantic Lottery Corporation annual report issued last month is any indication.

In 2024-25, Atlantic Lottery returned CAD $498.7 million in profit, an increase of $11.7 million over the previous year. President and CEO Dallas McCready stated that 100 per cent of profit is delivered back to Canada’s four Atlantic provinces, used to fund essential services like healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Out of the profit reported, $243.1 million was generated from the Destination line of business. Destination includes play at both of Atlantic Lottery’s Red Shores facilities in P.E.I., as well as all video lottery locations across the region.

CAD $11.7 Million Increase in Profit

And $255.6 million was generated from the Retail and iLottery lines of business. Retail is all sales at bricks and mortar retail locations, including Draw, Scratch’N Win, Pro-Line and other tickets. Finally, iLottery includes all purchases players made on alc.ca, whether they be for Draw tickets like Lotto Max, Pro-Line wagers purchased online, or casino games.

Breaking it down more, Atlantic Lottery returned $165.1 million to Nova Scotia, $154.6 million to New Brunswick, $153.1 million to Newfoundland and Labrador, and $25.9 million to Prince Edward Island.

Nearly $500 Million

Atlantic Lottery awarded $461.2 million in prizes in 2024-25, an increase of nearly $14 million compared to the previous fiscal year.

“Although we cannot provide a specific statistic for Atlantic Canada, our research and experience similarly indicate that casino games attract most online players within our region,” said Greg Weston, a spokesperson with Atlantic Lotter. “We do see further growth potential in that area, which has continued to experience significant growth in recent years.”

In the Ontario market, on the competitive, private sector end, revenue from online casinos had an 84% market share of the revenue total of CAD $8.9 billion that the market saw in September, according to data released by iGaming Ontario.

Casino breakdown in terms of revenue breakdown at the government-owned Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation igaming platform was not available.

Grey Market Still Dominating

Atlantic Lottery is the only legal provider of online gambling and sports betting in the region. Most people still wager on grey market platforms.

According to a statement, in 2024-25, Atlantic Lottery expanded their share of the online gaming market in the region from 22 per cent to 34 per cent. The five-year goal is to reach 50 per cent of the regional online gaming market, helping to reduce the approximately $200 million that leaves the region each year through illegal gambling operators.

Expanding their suite of casino online products will help with that.
