  • New rules around NBA injury reporting by teams
  • NBA looking for new restrictions on player prop betting
  • Rozier sports betting case plays out in New York court

First it was Major League Baseball. Then the NFL. Now it appears the NBA will soon be putting brakes on prop betting around their sport, according to reporting.

ESPN NBA reporter Shams Charania wrote that the NBA head office has sent out a missive to teams about new sports betting policies. A big part of the new rules surrounds injury reporting.

In a New York court yesterday, the federal case against Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier continued to play out, with Rozier’s lawyers looking to have wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges  related to sports betting against their client dropped.

Rozier Charges

It has been alleged that Rozier worked with bettors while he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets by deliberately pulling himself out of an NBA game in March 2023, due to an injury.

That information was allegedly passed over to a co-conspirator, who then sold the information to bettors. Those bettors placed more than $250K in prop bets, which Rozier directly benefitted from. Prosecutors said the information about Rozier’s injury wasn’t part of the Hornets’ pregame injury reports and wasn’t shared with the public or sportsbooks.

New Rules Around Injury Reporting

Under the new rules, according to reporting, teams will now be required to resubmit injury listings on game days between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, and update public reports every 15 minutes.

The NBA is also reportedly looking to partner with sports betting operators to slap some guardrails around prop bets involving individual players. Included there would be a limit on max amounts that can be wagered, and limits on “under” prop bets.

Weeks after two Cleveland Guardians pitchers were charged in a sports betting and money laundering conspiracy in October, sportsbook operators agreed to place a $200 wagering limit on micro-betting around individual pitches in MLB games, as well as prohibiting these types of bets from being included in parlays.

MLB Prop Betting Restrictions

In November, the NFL communicated to teams wager categories that are prohibited, including “markets or bets that are inherently or designed to be derogatory or inflammatory, or otherwise based on subject matter against public policy”, officiating-related markets, and markets around pre-determined outcomes directly related to on-field competition (for example, Will the QB start this week? Will the team’s first play from scrimmage be a run or pass?).
