  • The Las Vegas Raiders stand out in a GeoComply study of live, in-stadium bettor engagement
  • 105-13% of fans at top NFL venues engaged with betting apps during games
  • Playoff teams saw a measurable spike in in-stadium engagement

According to a new GeoComply study, on the eve of Super LX (February 8 in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.), some of the best player engagement with sports betting operators took place inside an NFL stadium.

Based on data generated from GeoComply Edge Stadium technology, the Vancouver-based company (GeoComply specializes in geolocation services, mainly for verifying where online users are) was able to capture real, on-site bettor behavior during live games, examining how fans engaged with betting apps inside the venue.

In-Stadium Betting Highlights

The technology analyzed game data from the first game of this past regular season — the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Field in Philadelphia against the Eagles — all the way through the final Wildcard Weekend game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, with the Houston Texans playing the Steelers.

The data helps sportsbook operators understand the connection between fandom and the live stadium experience and betting behaviors — specifically, which teams, games, and venues resonate most with fans in that regard, when they engage and how often they interact, and where growth is happening.

Las Vegas Gambling: Allegiant Stadium a Betting Hub

The study dove into which games drove the highest in-stadium betting engagement, how often people were checking their betting apps during games, how frequently fans engaged with their betting apps during live games, where new betting accounts were being created at the stadium level, and how engagement varied based on team performance, venue, and market maturity.

Some of the in-stadium highlights: 10%-13% of fans at NFL stadiums actively engaged with sports betting apps during games (one in every eight fans), with 130-450 brand-new betting accounts created per game — an indication of how live games drove customer acquisition in real time.

Naturally, there were measurable spikes in in-stadium engagement during playoff games. The Las Vegas Raiders, who play out of Allegiant Stadium, were the exception to that rule, emerging as more of a unique gambling destination venue, according to GeoComply data.

Missouri Sports Betting Goes Live

Allegiant Stadium was second to Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, in terms of year-over-year growth in in-stadium geolocation checks and active account growth, up 33.7% and 26%, respectively. Gillette was at 34.2% and 59%.

Another highlight from the study: how quickly football fans at GEHA Field, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, embraced sports betting after Missouri’s regulated sports betting market went live on December 1. GEHA Field led the way in in-stadium new user acquisition per game, at 525, followed by MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home of the two New York teams, at 509, then Northwest Stadium, home of the Washington Commanders, at 478.

So, while some stadiums, like the homes of the Broncos and Steelers, stood out because they had competitive teams, the Raiders were 3-14, making them an outlier of sorts, according to a GeoComply statement. Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Broncos, saw a 25.2% year-over-year increase in geolocation checks, and a 24% increase in active account growth, with Acrisure Stadium, home of the Steelers, seeing 19.5% and 17% increases.

That speaks more to Allegiant Stadium being a pro sports hub in a gambling destination.

Engagement Rate

In terms of engagement rate leaders — average active accounts per game measured against the average attendance per game — Ford Field in Detroit had the highest percentage, at 13.04%, followed by Gillette Stadium, at 12.56%, then Soldier Field in Chicago, at 11.83%.

In the end, the data shows an interesting cross-section between fandom in a live setting, technology, and wagering.
