- A sweepstakes casino company has donated $30,000 to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s 2026 gubernatorial campaign
- Tuberville hopes to depart Congress for the governor’s office in Alabama
- Tuberville is the betting front-runner for the Republican Primary in May and the November gubernatorial election
A prominent if not controversial online sweepstakes casino enterprise was among the largest donors in March to the 2026 Alabama gubernatorial campaign of Republican Tommy Tuberville.
The US Senator’s latest filing discloses that VGW LuckyLand Inc. made a substantial donation to his campaign last month.

Tuberville, the celebrated college football coach who led the Auburn Tigers to the 2004 National Championship, has served in Congress since 2021. Instead of seeking a second term in the US Senate, Tuberville announced last May that he would run to succeed term-limited Gov. Kay Ivey (R).
The popular Tuberville quickly emerged as the betting front-runner to become the next resident of the Governor’s Mansion in Montgomery. Prediction markets give Tuberville a more than 90% chance of winning the governorship in November.
The latest polling suggests Tuberville is basically a lock in for the Republican Primary on May 19. Tuberville has a 19-point polling lead over presumed Democratic challenger Doug Jones, a former US senator from Alabama who is the last Democrat to have won or held statewide office in the Cotton State.
Sweepstakes Casino Donation
Alabama remains among the most restrictive states when it comes to gambling. There is no lottery, casinos, racinos, parimutuel wagering, or sports betting. The state is home to Class II tribal casinos with electronic bingo-based machines.
Lawmakers have repeatedly looked at an array of gambling legislation, from a lottery-only bill to packages that would bring casino resorts and sports betting to the Bible Belt state.
Alabama’s deeply red legislature and the lobbying readiness of religious and faith-based organizations have kept those measures at bay.
Tuberville has reserved his personal opinions on gambling, saying such considerations should remain with the legislature. But the 2004 college football coach of the year has no qualms accepting money from gaming interests to put him in the state’s highest office.
In February, Tuberville also accepted a $10,000 from entities linked to Jeffrey Soffer, the developer behind the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
Alabama Online Casino Sweepstakes
While online casinos aren’t legal in Alabama, people in the state have easy access to internet slot machines, table games, including live dealer, and other various gambling games.
That’s because online sweepstakes casinos continue to operate in Alabama, with their dual-currency arrangement designed to sidestep claims that they’re unlicensed, unregulated iGaming platforms.
Sweepstakes casinos advertise as free-to-play social gaming websites and apps. Indeed, players can risk fun money on a variety of slots and simulated table games.
However, the platforms additionally offer a secondary digital coin, commonly called sweeps coins, that can be played for real money. Users can redeem their sweeps coins for cash withdrawals.
VGW LuckyLand Inc. is a leader in the innovative industry. The company’s brands include Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker.
VGW LuckyLand’s contribution to Tuberville’s campaign could be in hopes of the next governor taking a more favorable stance on any effort to legalize or prohibit online sweepstakes casinos.
