- The $348 million Mega Millions jackpot has been redeemed
- The jackpot hit in Virginia during the June 27 drawing
- The winner has chosen to remain anonymous
The winner of the $348 million Mega Millions jackpot won during the game’s June 27 drawing has come forward. Their identity, however, won’t be revealed.

Virginia is one of 13 states where winners of major lottery wins can remain anonymous. Most lottery states require winners of all levels, including jackpots, to allow their names to become part of the public record. The thinking in the majority of lottery states is that excluding anonymity increases the public’s perception of the lottery’s integrity.
In Virginia, winners of prizes upwards of $1 million can remain anonymous. The winner of the commonwealth’s richest lottery windfall ever is taking advantage of the nameless redemption opportunity.
Mega Millions Jackpot Redeemed
On June 27, after 20 drawings without a jackpot hit, a single ticket sold in Virginia matched the five white balls and gold Mega Ball. The numbers were 18, 21, 29, 42, and 50, and the gold Mega Ball 2.
The life-changing play was purchased at the Corner Mart Exxon gas station at 14878 Northumberland Highway in Heathsville along the Chesapeake Bay. About four weeks later, the winner walked into the Virginia Lottery headquarters in Richmond with the winning ticket.
The winner, who wished to remain anonymous, opted for the one-time cash option of $155.6 million. After federal taxes of 37% and Virginia’s 5.75% cut, the winner’s net payout came to approximately $89 million.
The winner told lottery officials that they plan to buy a zero-turn lawnmower. Anyone who purchases such a lawnmower in the area in the coming days and weeks will likely be suspected of being the newly minted multimillionaire.
For selling the winning Mega Millions ticket, the Corner Mart gas station received a $50K commission bonus.
Mega Millions is drawn again on Friday at 11 pm ET. The advertised jackpot is at $198 million, with the pre-tax cash option at $89.3 million. Powerball is drawn on Saturday, with the annuitized jackpot at $565 million. Powerball hasn’t hit since May 31.
Jackpocket Record
In other lottery news, Jackpocket, which was acquired by DraftKings in 2004 for $750 million, announced Thursday that a Massachusetts Lottery player using the courier service won a $4 million prize on a scratcher.
The player won the top prize for the “$4,000,000 Monopoly Doubler” scratch-off by using the Jackpocket mobile app. The scratch-off is a $10 game. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 3,780,000.
Jackpocket offers scratch-off purchases through its courier service in Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, and Oregon.
Jackpocket is partnered with the state lotteries to allow scratch-offs to become digitized plays. When a courier purchases the scratcher on behalf of the Jackpocket customer, the courier scans both sides of the ticket, including the watermarked barcode and serial number.
The ticket is uploaded to the player’s Jackpocket app, where it becomes digitized for play. The player “scratches” the ticket — no quarters required — to reveal the ticket’s outcome. Jackpocket automatically checks the ticket and informs the player if they’ve won. If they did, their winnings are credited to their Jackpocket account.
