The Miami Heat, currently sixth in the Eastern Conference at 14-10, are in Orlando to play the Magic tomorrow night. Meanwhile, Heat guard Terry Rozier was in a New York federal court today pleading not guilty to charges he manipulated his on-court performance to score payoffs from gambling connections.

Rozier is facing federal wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges for his alleged role in an illegal sports gambling scheme.
Rozier was released on a $3 million bond today. He was arrested in October in connection to a federal investigation into illegal gambing.
$200K in Wagers
According to an indictment from the U.S. Justice Department, when he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets in March 2023, Rozier allegedly tipped off gamblers that he planned to pull himself out early from a game, claiming he was injured. Based on that information, gamblers put down $200,000 in wagers predicting Rozier’s “under” statistics for that game. Sportsbooks had reported unusual betting activity on Rozier that game.
Rozier has been placed on unpaid leave by the NBA. The league had conducted a previous investigation into Rozier and the betting allegations but determined he did not violate league rules.
Money Laundering Conspiracy Charge
The 31-year-old Rozier was instructed by the court today not to gamble, possess firearms or have any contact with victims, co-defendants and witnesses in the case. Rozier also had to forfeit his passport and was restricted to travelling between Florida, New York and Ohio.
Rozier’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, said after today’s court hearing that his client was “excited” to start mounting a defence. Trusty said he plans to file a motion for dismissal Tuesday, and will challenge his client’s unpaid leave status with the NBA, according to The Athletic. The NBA Players Association has already filed a grievance about that. Rozier is in the last year of a four-year, $96.3 million contract,
U.S District Judge Lashawn DeArcy Hall set March 3 as the next hearing date.
Prosecutors have indicated they will be handing over “voluminous” amounts of materials to defence lawyers that have come out of the investigation against Rozier, including, according to reports, 1,000 pages of documents and 55 gigabytes of data.
$96.3 Million Contract
Rozier’s arrest in October was past of a massive FBI takedown of individuals allegedly involved in illegal gambling, including an illegal poker scheme, unrelated to the Rozier sports betting file, involving Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former NBA Player Damon Jones. Both of those individuals have pleaded not guilty. The poker scheme involved members of the mafia, according to the FBI.
Jones is also accused of providing non-public, injury-related information involving LeBron James and Anthony Davis to bettors while he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers staff during the 2022-23 season.
