NBA free agent Malik Beasley is being investigated by the U.S. District Attorney’s office over gambling allegations tied to NBA games, according to media reporting today.

Investigation Into Gambling Allegations

Beasley’s lawyer told Associated Press there have been no charges at this point. Specifically, Beasley is being investigated for gambling related to league games and prop bets during the 2023-2024 season, when he was playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Last season he played with the Detroit Pistons, and he had been reportedly closing in on a new three-year contract with the team. The shooting guard signed a one-year deal with the Pistons last year, finished the season averaging 16.3 points per game, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists, and was looking to cash in on a multi-year deal.

Beasley helped the Pistons make the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Shams Charania of ESPN wrote those contracts talks are now on pause.

Jontay Porter Sentencing

The Beasley investigation comes just over a year after Jontay Porter, formerly with the Toronto Raptors, was permanently banned from the league for violating gambling rules.

Investigations revealed Porter manipulated his performance in games, along with co-conspirators, to influence betting outcomes, including faking injuries to exit games early. Court documents revealed text messages where Porter talked about his intention to bench himself to manipulate prop bets.

Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in July 2024, admitting he participated in the scheme to clear gambling debts.

NBA Games and Prop Bets

Porter, banned for life by the NBA, is looking at a possible prison term. Federal prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 41-51 months in jail. His sentencing hearing was originally set for last May, but it was pushed back to December.

Earlier this year news came out that Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat was being investigated by federal authorities for unusual betting patterns involving a 2023 game he was involved in, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets, but Rozier hasn’t been charged with anything and hasn’t been penalized by the NBA in any way.
