  • There’s been a recent surge in sex toy throwing incidents at WNBA games
  • Polymarket condemned for making markets on those events
  • Contracts still available for weekend games

Much to the dismay of some WNBA fans and some “judges” in the court of public opinion, prediction markets operator Polymarket is capitalizing on a recent uptick in sex toy throwing at the league’s games, offering event contracts on those incidents.

Since late July, incidents of fans throwing sex toys at WNBA arenas surged. A Tuesday instance at the Phoenix Mercury game led to the arrest of the alleged thrower because the object reportedly struck a man and his nine-year-old niece. Polymarket, which hasn’t shied away from making markets on controversial events, got in on the action.

Announcing: Dildo dailies,” the Polymarket Sports X account posted on Wednesday. “You can now bet on which day(s) dildos will hit the WNBA court.”

That drew derision from WNBA fans with one respondent to the tweet saying Polymarket’s marketing ploy was a slight to WNBA players. Another chimed in to say taking bets on whether or not or how many of the non-family-friendly devices will be thrown at games amounts to encouraging bad actors.

WNBA Sex Toy Throwing Bets Popular on Polymarket

In what’s arguably a case of people will bet on anything, as of late Thursday, more than $500,000 worth of sex toy-related event contracts swapped hands on Polymarket. In recent days, there have been instances of Polymarket seeing more activity on sex toy throwing contracts than on derivatives linked to the actual WNBA games.

Despite the criticism, Polymarket hasn’t pulled the contracts. In fact, activity in that market for the WNBA’s weekend slate is vibrant as highlighted by nearly $63,000 in related transactions for the Friday games as of this writing. As the Polymarket table below indicates, bettors are favoring “no” wagers.

Bettors and traders considering the event contracts beware because there’s a sex toy-related qualifier that could determine outcomes.

“This market will resolve to ‘Yes’ if a dildo is thrown onto the court during a WNBA game on the listed date (ET). Otherwise, it will resolve to ‘No,’” according to Polymarket. “A qualifying object is exclusively a dildo, defined as an object shaped like an erect penis used for sexual stimulation. Other sex toys will not qualify.”

Memecoin Group Behind Some WNBA Incidents

In fairness to Polymarket, it’s not the only company making markets on the WNBA sex toy matter. Some offshore bookmakers are doing the same with some having done so before Polymarket joined the fray. At least one offshore book has offered more than five such markets and rumors indicate bettors have widely embraced those offerings.

Separately, the WNBA sex toy imbroglio is another example of the extent to which to some folks will go to make a buck in today’s cryptocurrency-crazed environment. Recent incidents are attributable to the purveyors of a memecoin known as Green Dildo Coin.

They accomplished their objective because Green Dildo Coin surged nearly 86% today and has more than quadrupled in value over the past week.
