The Big Boy restaurant at Terrible’s Casino Indian Springs is closing. After more than five years in business, the hamburger joint says its last service is today, March 31.

Though it wasn’t officially a Bob’s because the Big Boy Indian Springs location was operated by Big Boy Restaurant Group, the Michigan-based franchisee of Bob’s Big Boy that acquired the iconic West Coast diner brand on the condition that they not include founder Bob Wian’s name, the casino restaurant otherwise oozed the brand’s likeness. The Big Boy statue has gladly stood outside the casino since November 2020, when the Big Boy Indian Springs opened.

After five incredible years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Big Boy Indian Springs location. Thank you for being part of our journey,” the Big Boy Nevada Instagram page posted.

Tuesday is the final day to grab a famed Big Boy. In 1937, Wian was credited with inventing the double-deck hamburger by splitting the bottom half of the bun to create three slices of bread. It was initially a joke, with Wian saying it looked like a “leaning tower.”

Big Boy Getting Small

Today’s closure of the Big Boy Indian Springs means there will remain just 53 Big Boys in the United States. The vast majority of the diners are located in Michigan, though four are located in Southern California. There are also dozens of Frisch’s Big Boy, another spinoff of Bob’s, in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Big Boy Restaurant Group and Frisch’s are unaffiliated entities.

Terrible’s Indian Springs, primarily a travel center with fuel and a convenience store, offers a little more than 50 slot machines. Located along High 95, roughly 45 minutes northwest of Las Vegas, Terrible’s is across from Creech Air Force Base. The United States Air Force facility is a military operation engaged in the daily Overseas Contingency Operations of the USAF.

The Big Boy Indian Springs Instagram post suggested that the Big Boy Restaurant Group might be implementing a new restaurant concept at Terrible’s.

“Keep an eye out for what’s next inside Indian Springs Casino!” the post read.

Big Boy Indian Springs had relatively favorable reviews. On Google, the diner was rated 4.1/5 stars on more than 1,200 reviews.

People say this restaurant serves great burgers and milkshakes. They also highlight the friendly service and clean atmosphere,” Google’s summary of the reviews read.

Some Bob’s loyalists, however, claim a Big Boy is not exactly the same as a Bob’s Big Boy. They contend that the famed burger relish is slightly different, and blue cheese isn’t on the menu.

Big Boy Restaurants

Big Boy closing its Indian Springs restaurant comes just months after the restaurant group closed its six Dolly’s Burgers and Shakes in Cincinnati and Dayton. The restaurants had formerly been Big Boys.

Big Boy cited an ongoing legal battle with Frisch’s. A court had ordered Big Boy Restaurant Group to rename its locations in certain parts of Ohio. Dolly was the fictitious girlfriend of Big Boy.
