  • Mets step up with three-year, $126 million contract, according to reports
  • Bichette news comes on heels of Kyle Tucker signing with the LA Dodgers
  • Mets’ World Series odds shorten with Bichette signing

World Series odds are bouncing all over the place with the breaking news that the New York Mets have signed Bo Bichette to a huge money, three-year deal, according to reporting, first by The Athletic.

Details are still coming in, but Will Sammon posted that the two parties have an agreement pending a physical. Breaking news by Jon Heyman says it’s a $126 million contract over the three years, with opt-outs after each of the first two seasons. Heyman said Bichette is expected to play third base with the Mets. He’s been a career shortstop, but the money clearly changed his mind, if he was looking to hold on to that position going into free agency.

That’s a massive piece of news, just hours after Thursday night’s development that saw the LA Dodgers step up and bolster an already lethal batting lineup, inking OF Kyle Tucker, the top free agent available on the market this off-season, to a four-year, $240 million contract.

The Bichette news is huge for the Mets, who have had a rough off-season, watching roster stalwarts Brandon Nimmo (trade with the Texas Rangers), Pete Alonso, and Edwin Diaz (both free agents signing elsewhere) walk out the door.

World Series Odds Movement

A contact from theScore Bet tells us that with the Bichette news, the Mets have moved from +1500 to win the World Series to +1400. And in corresponding moves, the Phillies, who had also been rumoured to have been in on the shortstop, and Blue Jays, who were also talking to Bichette about bringing him back into the fold, have both dropped from +1200 to win the World Series to +1400. The Yankees (+900) have the second-best odds behind the +225 Dodgers.

Where that leaves the Toronto Blue Jays is anyone’s guess, unless you buy the corporate media Sportsnet spin (Rogers Communications Inc. owns both Sportsnet and the baseball team) that the organization had already had a brilliant off-season, signing four players while spending $337 million. Bichette or Tucker would have been cherries on top of a cake that’s already been baked, if you believe that. Bichette and Tucker would have been nice, but the implication was the team didn’t need them, because they’ve accomplished so much already.

Bellinger Still on the Market

Before the Bichette news broke, we heard from a few of the sportsbooks about odds adjustment in light of what the Dodgers did Thursday night. According to theScore Bet, with news of Tucker signing with the Dodgers, LA moved from a +300 favorite for World Series Winner to +225. Heading into Thursday, LA was +140 to win the NL Pennant, and is now +125.

In the overall World Series Winner market, the Dodgers have attracted the most bets (37%) and handle (36.1%). Since Thursday night, the Dodgers have 85.9% of all WS Winner bets and 91.5% of all WS Winner handle wagered on theScore Bet.

At BetMGM on Friday morning, the Dodgers went from +300 before the Tucker signing to +225, +160 to +130 to win the National League, and -375 to -650 to win the NL West.
