A Long Island, N.Y. cop is accused of duping a sick fellow officer into investing $200,000 into a phony business, before spending the money in just two months on gambling and OnlyFans. The rest, he squandered.

Leonard Cagno, 39, of Oakdale, was arrested September 17 on second-degree grand larceny charges. Suffolk County prosecutors claim he solicited the funds under the pretense that they would go toward his company, BW Media Consulting, LLC. The victim believed the money would be used for legitimate investment purposes.

Phony Business Pitch

Instead, Cagno bought a new car, paid off credit card debt, and splurged on dining, gambling, and the aforementioned adult-content service, according to prosecutors.

Cagno has been suspended by the Nassau County Police Department without pay, a department spokesperson confirmed.

The victim, also a member of the department, is unnamed but was described by prosecutors as recovering from a serious medical condition at the time he was convinced to part with his money.

The allegations here represent a shocking abuse of the essential trust that exists between fellow police officers,” Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney said. “This defendant is alleged to have preyed upon that trust for his own financial gain, and in so doing, violated one of the most important bonds in law enforcement.”

BW Media Consulting Inc. is a registered entity under New York law. State records show it was filed on February 20, 2020, is active, and lists Leonard Cagno as the registered agent.

Not Guilty Plea

Cagno, who had been with the Nassau police department since 2015, according to salary records, pleaded not guilty before Suffolk County Court Judge Jennifer Henry on Wednesday and was released without bail on his own recognizance.

Assistant District Attorney Patrick Rooney of the Public Corruption Bureau is prosecuting the case, and the investigation was handled by the DA’s Public Corruption Squad, according to TBR News Media.

If convicted of second-degree grand larceny, a Class C felony, Cagno could face up to 15 years in prison under New York law. He is due back in court on October 22.
